Stansted Airport to The City of London Transfer – Fixed Price to the Square Mile
A Stansted Airport to The City of London transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 55 to 75 minutes door to door and from £196 one way, running in both directions 24/7. The return leg, The City of London to Stansted Airport, is the same fixed fare and the same route in reverse. The Square Mile is a genuine weekday business district first – it empties out on the weekend, and that pattern shapes almost every booking on this route.
This journey is one of the routes on our Stansted airport chauffeur page, which covers every destination we drive from the airport with the same Mercedes fleet, the same met-at-arrivals pickup and the same fixed-price promise.

All prices are fixed and all-inclusive, agreed before you travel, in both directions. Final quote depends on exact pickup or drop-off address, vehicle choice and any additional stops. No surge pricing, no hidden fees.
Every fare includes in-terminal meet-and-greet inside the Stansted arrivals hall, flight tracking so a delayed landing doesn’t cost you the booking, and 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time. The £10 Express Set Down charge at the terminal is absorbed in the price shown, and so is the ULEZ charge and the Congestion Charge where the journey into The City of London crosses into the zone – the airport itself sits outside both, the charges belong to the journey, not the pickup. Split seven ways, £292 works out at £42 a head for the whole run, useful for a team travelling in together for the same meeting.
The Square Mile: Weekday Mornings, Weekend Emptiness
The City of London runs to its own rhythm. On a weekday morning it’s one of the densest concentrations of financial, legal and insurance firms anywhere in Europe, built around the Bank of England, the Lloyd’s building and the Guildhall, and a large share of MILE5’s Square Mile bookings land before the working day starts. By Saturday the same streets can feel close to empty – the resident population is small, and most of the people who fill the City during the week live somewhere else entirely. A driver who knows this pattern plans differently for a Monday-morning arrival than a Sunday one.
MILE5 covers The City of London alongside the neighbouring City, Clerkenwell and east London districts, including how we price Clerkenwell, the drive to Shoreditch and our Hackney transfer service.
For a stay at one of the area’s hotels, MILE5 runs the same fixed-price transfer to our The Ned Hotel write-up, and for the station itself see the Liverpool Street district page.
The Bank Junction Traffic Order
Bank junction, at the centre of the Square Mile, has been closed to most traffic from 7am to 7pm on weekdays since 2017, including private cars and private hire vehicles, and it is enforced by camera. It’s a detail that catches out drivers who don’t work the City regularly, and getting it wrong means a fine as well as a wasted diversion. MILE5’s drivers route around the order as a matter of course, which matters more here than on almost any other route on this site.
The City of London Chauffeur vs the Stansted Express vs a Hire Car
For one person travelling in daylight hours, the honest comparison starts with the train, not the car.
| Option | Journey time | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| MILE5 chauffeur | 55-75min | Door to door, fixed price, routes around the Bank junction restriction automatically |
| Stansted Express + change | 48min to Liverpool St + a change | Wins on price and time to Liverpool Street itself, which sits on the edge of the City – a strong option for one person heading to that side of the Square Mile |
| Hire car | 55-75min | Similar drive time, but the Bank junction restriction and the City’s dense one-way system catch out anyone without local knowledge, on top of the ULEZ and Congestion Charge – both already built into MILE5’s fixed price |
For a team travelling in together, or an early meeting before the working day starts, the better comparison is a pre-booked chauffeur against a minicab booked at short notice – see MILE5’s comparison of Uber against Bolt in London.
What Running This Route Has Taught Us
The Stansted Express is honestly the right call for one person catching a daytime train into Liverpool Street, which sits right on the City’s edge – it’s faster and it’s cheaper. Where the car earns its keep is at the edges: the first trains out of Liverpool Street leave at 03:40 on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, 04:10 on Sundays and 04:40 Tuesday to Thursday, which is tight for the earliest departure wave out of Stansted, and the last train back from the airport leaves at 00:30, so a delayed late arrival lands into no train at all. That gap, in both directions, is where a pre-booked fixed-price car earns its keep over a train ticket – and for an early meeting inside the Bank junction restriction, a driver who already knows the route in is worth more than the lower fare.
Your Driver at Stansted Airport
Stansted has one terminal building – there’s no North or South side to specify, unlike Gatwick. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall holding a name board, tracking your flight so a delay shifts the pickup time rather than costing you the booking. The Express Set Down area sits right next to the terminal, and the £10 charge there is already built into the fixed price above. Check the arrivals board and MILE5’s own Stansted Airport guide for terminal-specific detail on the day.

How much is a Stansted Airport to The City of London transfer?
Fares start from £196 one way in the E-Class, £287 in the S-Class and £292 in the V-Class, fixed and agreed before you travel, the same in both directions.
Do you cover The City of London to Stansted Airport transfers too?
Yes – every booking runs in both directions at the same fixed price, whether you’re travelling out to The City of London or making the The City of London to Stansted Airport run afterwards.
Does the Bank junction restriction affect my transfer?
It affects the route, not the price – MILE5’s drivers already route around the weekday restriction at Bank junction, so it’s handled before you even book.

Around 55 to 75 minutes in normal traffic, running the M11 before crossing into the Square Mile.
Is the Stansted Express cheaper than a chauffeur to The City of London?
On price alone for one person heading to the Liverpool Street side of the City, yes. It’s about 48 minutes to Liverpool Street, though it doesn’t help with luggage, a group, or an address deeper into the Square Mile.

Yes – The City of London is primarily a weekday business district, and the streets are noticeably quieter on Saturday and Sunday than during the working week.
What happens if my flight into Stansted is delayed?
Nothing changes on your end. Every City of London booking is flight-tracked, so a delayed landing shifts your driver’s pickup time automatically rather than costing you the fare or the booking.
Can I book a larger vehicle for a team travelling together?
Yes – the V-Class seats up to seven with matching luggage space, and at £292 for the whole vehicle that works out at £42 a head for a full group.
