Stansted Airport to Romford Transfer – Fixed Price to the Essex Fringe
A Stansted Airport to Romford transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 45 to 65 minutes door to door and from £178 one way, running in both directions 24/7. The return leg, Romford to Stansted Airport, is the same fixed fare and the same route in reverse. Romford sits inside the London borough of Havering, right on the Essex fringe, and although it feels more like Essex than inner London, it is administratively London all the same.
This journey is one of the routes on our luxury Stansted airport transfer page, which covers every destination we drive from the airport with the same Mercedes fleet, the same met-at-arrivals pickup and the same fixed-price promise.

Romford sits close to 30 miles south-east of Stansted Airport – see the Stansted to London hub for every other district MILE5 covers. The route runs the M11 and then the M25 or North Circular before the final stretch on the A12, and in normal traffic that’s around 45 to 65 minutes.

All prices are fixed and all-inclusive, agreed before you travel, in both directions. Final quote depends on exact pickup or drop-off address, vehicle choice and any additional stops. No surge pricing, no hidden fees.
Every fare includes in-terminal meet-and-greet inside the Stansted arrivals hall, flight tracking so a delayed landing doesn’t cost you the booking, and 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time. The £10 Express Set Down charge at the terminal is absorbed in the price shown, and so is the ULEZ charge and the Congestion Charge where the journey into Romford crosses into the zone – the airport itself sits outside both, the charges belong to the journey, not the pickup. Split seven ways, £263 works out at £38 a head for the whole run – useful for a family group covering the Essex fringe together.
Outer East London and the Essex Fringe
Romford sits at the outer edge of Greater London, inside the borough of Havering, closer in feel to the Essex towns just beyond its boundary than to inner London. The market town centre still runs a street market that dates back centuries, and the wider area is more suburban high street than office district – a genuinely different character from the central London routes on the rest of this list. It’s a fair question whether a page like this belongs with ‘London’ at all, and the honest answer is that Romford is administratively part of Greater London even though the drive and the destination both feel like the Essex fringe.
MILE5 covers Romford alongside the wider Essex and outer-London cluster, including the drive to Paddington, the Waterloo pickup page, see our Chelmsford transfer and the nearby Brentwood route.
The A12 Corridor and the Final Approach
At under 30 miles, Romford is one of the shorter drives on MILE5’s London list, and it is priced accordingly.
Romford Chauffeur vs the Stansted Express vs a Hire Car
For one person travelling in daylight hours, the honest comparison starts with the train, not the car.
| Option | Journey time | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| MILE5 chauffeur | 45-65min | Door to door, fixed price agreed before you travel, direct via the A12 corridor |
| Stansted Express + change | 48min to Liverpool St + a change | Wins on price and time to Liverpool Street itself, but Romford needs a further train out from there – workable for one person, less so with luggage or a family group |
| Hire car | 45-65min | Similar drive time, and Romford sits inside the ULEZ but outside the Congestion Charge zone – but no flight tracking if your Stansted arrival runs late |
For a family group, or an early meeting before the working day starts, the better comparison is a pre-booked chauffeur against a minicab booked at short notice – see MILE5’s comparison of Uber Exec against Uber Lux in London.
What Running This Route Has Taught Us
The Stansted Express is honestly the right call for one person catching a daytime train into Liverpool Street – it’s faster and it’s cheaper, and Romford is only a short further hop from there by train. Where the car earns its keep is at the edges: the first trains out of Liverpool Street leave at 03:40 on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, 04:10 on Sundays and 04:40 Tuesday to Thursday, which is tight for the earliest departure wave out of Stansted, and the last train back from the airport leaves at 00:30, so a delayed late arrival lands into no train at all. That gap, in both directions, is where a pre-booked fixed-price car earns its keep over two separate train legs – and for a family group with luggage, one direct car beats a change at Liverpool Street every time.
Your Driver at Stansted Airport
Stansted has one terminal building – there’s no North or South side to specify, unlike Gatwick. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall holding a name board, tracking your flight so a delay shifts the pickup time rather than costing you the booking. The Express Set Down area sits right next to the terminal, and the £10 charge there is already built into the fixed price above. Check the arrivals board and MILE5’s own Stansted Airport guide for terminal-specific detail on the day.
