Norwich sits 83.7 miles north-east of Stansted Airport, reached via the A11, the single road that connects the airport’s catchment directly to Norfolk’s county city on our full long-distance route list. In clear traffic that’s around 100 to 120 minutes, dual carriageway for almost the entire run since the A11’s Thetford-to-Barton Mills stretch was upgraded, with the exception of the final few miles into the city centre.

There is a direct train between Stansted Airport and Norwich, and it’s a genuinely competitive option on paper – roughly 1 hour 51 minutes to 1 hour 57 minutes depending on the service, comparable to or even quicker than the road on a good day. Where the chauffeur earns its keep is everything the timetable doesn’t cover: no walk to a specific platform with luggage, no fixed departure to build a schedule around, and one fixed price whether it’s one passenger or a full group. MILE5 is a TfL-licensed operator, licence 009161, with 15+ years and 50,000 completed transfers behind it and a five-star Google rating from real passengers – read what our clients say.

Every fare includes in-terminal meet-and-greet inside the Stansted arrivals hall, flight tracking so a delayed landing doesn’t cost you the booking, and 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time. The £10 Express Set Down charge at the terminal is absorbed in the price shown, and there’s no ULEZ or Congestion Charge to think about on this route either way. Split seven ways in the V-Class, £451 works out under £65 a head for the whole run – a single known figure for the whole group.

Where MILE5 Picks Up and Drops Off in Norwich

Norwich earned the nickname “a fine city” for good reason – its skyline is anchored by Norwich Cathedral’s spire, at 315 feet the second tallest in England after Salisbury, sitting above the largest monastic cloisters in the country. MILE5 drops most visitors closest to the Cathedral Quarter or Norwich Castle, the Norman keep on its mound overlooking the city centre, now a museum and art gallery. From there, Elm Hill’s cobbled medieval lane and the independent shops of The Lanes are a short walk, as is Norwich Market, one of the largest and longest-running outdoor markets in the country, trading continuously on the same site since the 11th century.

Norwich is the main city on MILE5’s East Anglia routes from Stansted – the same fixed-price approach also covers Ely’s cathedral city further down the A10, at its own fixed price.

What Visitors Come to Norwich For

Norwich Cathedral itself is the city’s defining draw: founded in 1096, its Norman nave is one of the most complete in England, and the cloisters – the largest of their kind in the country – are free to walk. Norwich Castle’s keep, one of the largest surviving Norman keeps in Europe, now houses a museum covering Norfolk’s archaeology and art, including the Norwich School painters and a large ceramics and teapot collection. Dragon Hall, a rare surviving medieval merchant’s trading hall on King Street, and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norman Foster’s landmark gallery building on the University of East Anglia campus, both draw specific, repeat visitor traffic through Stansted rather than passing tourism. Norwich also functions as the practical entry point for the Norfolk Broads and the north Norfolk coast, so a share of MILE5’s bookings continue on from the city rather than stopping there.

Norwich Chauffeur vs the Train vs a Hire Car

OptionJourney timeWorth knowing
MILE5 chauffeur100-120 minDoor to door, fixed price, flight-tracked, one fare per group
Direct trainRoughly 1h51-1h57mA genuine direct service, but priced per passenger and tied to a timetable
Hire car100-120 minSimilar drive time, plus desk time, excess and parking to arrange in Norwich

Norwich is one of the few destinations on this network where the train genuinely competes with the chauffeur on raw journey time – it’s a direct service and it’s not slow. The case for MILE5 here is less about speed and more about certainty for a group: one booking, one fixed fare for the whole car, and a driver who adjusts to a delayed flight automatically. For travellers weighing an app-based ride against a pre-booked fixed fare over this kind of distance, MILE5’s comparison of Addison Lee and Uber in London covers how the two compare on reliability and pricing certainty outside the capital.

What Running This Route Has Taught Us

The A11’s dualling through Elveden, Fiveways and the Thetford bypass removed what used to be the route’s worst bottleneck, so the drive is far more predictable than it was a few years ago – the last genuinely variable stretch now is the final approach into Norwich itself, where the A11 meets the southern and northern sections of the ring road. Inside the city, several streets around the Cathedral Quarter and Norwich Market are pedestrianised or access-restricted, particularly during the Lord Mayor’s Procession and the Christmas market period, and term-time traffic on the roads out to the UEA campus can add unpredictable delay on weekday afternoons. None of it changes the fixed price, but it’s why MILE5 asks for the exact address and, where relevant, the date of travel rather than just “Norwich city centre” when a booking is confirmed.

Your Driver at Stansted Airport

Stansted has one terminal building – there’s no North or South side to specify, unlike Gatwick. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall holding a name board, tracking your flight so a delay shifts the pickup time rather than costing you the booking. The Express Set Down area sits right next to the terminal, and the £10 charge there is already built into the fixed price above. Check the arrivals board and MILE5’s own Stansted Airport guide for terminal-specific detail on the day.
