Stansted Airport terminal and transport links
Stansted operates a single Main Terminal, so every arrival comes into the same arrivals hall and there is no terminal to confirm. Departure gates are in three satellite buildings reached by the automated transit train (gates 1-39) or on foot (gates 40-59 and 81-88), which is why the walk to the gate can take longer than the terminal’s size suggests. The busiest routes in 2025 were Dublin, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen and Edinburgh. Our Stansted Airport guide covers the terminal layout, security and the satellite walk in detail.
The Stansted Express runs every 15 minutes to London Liverpool Street in 45 to 53 minutes, and the station is beneath the terminal. By road, central London is about 60 minutes traffic dependent, Cambridge around 40 minutes and Harlow about 30. Check the Stansted live flight status above before you set off, especially in the early-morning departure wave and after midnight when arrivals bunch together.
Stansted departures and gate information
The live departures board above lists every outbound flight with its scheduled and estimated time, destination, airline and status, and you can move the date forward to check tomorrow’s departures. Stansted’s first wave leaves from around 06:00, so security is busiest between 04:00 and 07:00. Gate numbers appear on the airport screens shortly before boarding; allow time for the train or the walk once your gate is called, and our Stansted gate walking times guide shows which gates are which.
Picking someone up at Stansted
The forecourt outside the terminal is the Express Set Down, a barrier-free zone with number-plate cameras: since 19 March 2026 it costs £10 for up to 15 minutes and £28 for 15 to 30 minutes, payable online by midnight the following day, with a £100 penalty (£60 if paid within 14 days) for non-payment. Waiting for arriving passengers there is expensive; use the Short Stay car park next to the terminal, or the Mid Stay car park, which gives the first hour free with a shuttle about every seven minutes. Blue Badge holders are exempt on the forecourt but must register the badge with Stansted in advance. For onward travel into town, see our Stansted to central London routes.
