Southend Airport is the airport most Londoners forget exists—and that’s precisely its appeal. Located about 36 miles east of central London in Essex, it was the UK’s fastest-growing airport in 2025, handling 720,000 passengers with a staggering 150% increase on the previous year. It’s a place with genuine aviation pedigree: the airfield opened in 1914 as a Royal Flying Corps base, served as RAF Rochford during the Battle of Britain—hosting Spitfire and Hurricane squadrons—and was the UK’s third-busiest airport during the 1960s, behind only Heathrow and Manchester. Today it’s a lean, modern operation built around a single easyJet base that’s expanding rapidly. This London Southend Airport Guide covers everything you need for a smooth journey. MILE5 runs fixed-price chauffeur transfers from Southend just as it does from the big five airports, met inside the terminal.

What makes Southend different from every other London airport? The train station is directly opposite the terminal—not a shuttle bus away, not a DART ride, but literally across the forecourt. The station is about 100 steps from the terminal. The 100ml liquid rule was scrapped in February 2026, so you can carry up to two litres of liquids in your cabin bag. Security is famously quick, with reports of passengers being the only person in the queue. And the SKYLIFE Lounge is genuinely good value from £36. easyJet now bases three Airbus A320neo aircraft here, and keeps adding routes, with Munich from 17 September 2026, Edinburgh and Belfast City from 25 October, Budapest from 26 October, Lyon from 3 December and Sharm El Sheikh from 4 January 2027. We’ve completed over 50,000 chauffeur transfers since 2011, including hundreds to and from Southend—TfL Licence No. 009161—so this guide is built on real operational experience, not just internet research.

Airlines at Southend: easyJet’s Newest Base

Southend is effectively an easyJet airport. The airline opened its base here in March 2025 with three Airbus A320neo aircraft, supporting around 1,200 jobs including 140 direct positions for pilots and cabin crew. In 2026 easyJet flies 26 routes from Southend to leisure destinations across Europe and North Africa, with more added this winter. The top five routes in 2025 were Palma, Malaga, Amsterdam, Alicante, and Paris, accounting for 345,000 passengers across more than 2,300 flights. Added in 2026: Jersey (from 30 March, Mondays and Thursdays), Munich, Ibiza, Barcelona, Berlin, and Naples. Spain was the standout destination market, with almost 345,000 passengers travelling to Spanish hotspots including Almeria, Tenerife, and Las Palmas. The airport’s catchment area—roughly the size of Switzerland—covers 8.2 million people within an hour’s drive, stretching across Essex, East London, and East Anglia.

Southend handles almost exclusively European leisure routes. If you’re flying long-haul to the Americas, Asia, or Africa, you’ll need Heathrow, Gatwick, or Stansted. For guides to those airports, see our Heathrow Terminal 5 Guide, Gatwick South Terminal Guide, and Stansted Airport Guide.

Security at Southend: 100ml Rule Scrapped, CT Scanners Live

Here’s the news most passengers want: Southend has scrapped the 100ml liquid rule. As of February 2026, new C3 CT security scanners are fully operational, meaning you can carry liquids up to two litres in your cabin baggage—no need for clear plastic bags, no need to remove liquids or laptops from your bag. Aerosols larger than 500ml are not permitted in either hand or hold baggage. Metal containers and flasks must be emptied before security, but you can refill them at water fountains or food outlets afterwards. One important caveat: many overseas airports have not yet upgraded their scanners, so you may still need to follow the 100ml rule on your return journey. Always check your destination airport’s regulations.

Security at Southend is famously efficient. The airport processes passengers so quickly that Google’s AI Overview describes typical security times as “only 1-2 minutes.” Fast Track security can be pre-booked from £8 per person, and families with children aged five and under can use the Fast Track lane before joining the normal security queue. Children under one metre tall receive a brief hand search rather than going through the body scanner. Breast milk, sterilised water, baby food, and specialised baby milk formulas are permitted in cabin baggage and are not included in the two-litre liquid allowance.

Inside Southend Airport: Shopping, Dining & the SKYLIFE Lounge

Shopping: Southend’s retail offering is modest but covers the essentials. World Duty Free offers a range of global brands for passengers leaving the UK. WHSmith stocks books, magazines, confectionery, travel accessories, and health and beauty essentials. Travelex ATMs are available throughout the terminal for currency. There’s also a small duty-free shop and a currency exchange. The airport is refreshingly free of the endless perfume-counter gauntlet you’d find at larger terminals.

Dining: The Navigator is the airport’s contemporary pub, open daily from 4:00 AM until the last departing flight. It serves a range of dishes and drinks, and for early morning flights it’s a genuine asset—proper coffee and breakfast before you fly. The SKYCAFÉ operates both airside and landside: the airside café serves freshly ground coffee, all-day breakfast, sandwiches, and sweet treats with vegan and vegetarian options; the landside café is ideal for arriving passengers or those waiting to pick up travellers. For those staying at the adjacent Holiday Inn, the 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar offers panoramic views of the runway and surrounding countryside with modern British dishes.

SKYLIFE Lounge: The SKYLIFE Lounge is airside, after security, and is open daily from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Standard entry costs from £36 per person for up to two hours, including complimentary food, drinks, Wi‑Fi, and charging stations. Premium entry from £46 includes lounge access plus Fast Track security and a reserved table. Priority Pass, DragonPass, Lounge Key, and Diners Club International are all accepted; Priority Pass members can pre-book a guaranteed slot for £7. Children aged 36 months or younger enter free. The lounge serves a decent lunch menu, hot and cold drinks, and provides a quiet retreat—though it’s worth noting there are no showers or dedicated sleep facilities.

Transport: Getting To and From Southend Airport

Train: Southend’s Superpower

This is arguably Southend’s biggest advantage over every other London airport. The railway station is directly opposite the terminal—about 100 steps from the arrivals exit to the platform. Greater Anglia services run up to six peak trains per hour to London Liverpool Street (52 minutes) and Stratford (43 minutes), with connections to the Elizabeth Line at Shenfield, Stratford, and Liverpool Street. First and last train times vary by day, so check the Greater Anglia or National Rail Enquiries timetable for your date. Tickets are available from the station ticket office (open daily 6:00 AM–11:00 PM) or from self-service machines available 24/7. Oyster is not valid here, but contactless pay as you go has been accepted at Southend Airport since 8 March 2026. The journey time of 52 minutes to Liverpool Street means Southend is only a few minutes slower than the Stansted Express (about 48 minutes), and unlike Luton there is no shuttle between terminal and platform.

Taxi: Andrews Taxis & Late-Night Share Scheme

Andrews Taxis is the official taxi service at Southend Airport, with a rank directly in front of the terminal building about 50 paces from the arrivals exit. The airport does not publish a standard fare to central London, so ask for a quote before you travel. If a delayed flight lands after the last train has departed, Southend operates a taxi share scheme: £27.50 per person to London Liverpool Street, minimum four passengers. If fewer than four passengers, the total cost of £110 is divided among the travellers—so two passengers pay £55 each. This is a genuinely useful scheme that few airports offer.

Bus Services

The First Bus X30 connects Southend to Stansted Airport via Chelmsford, operating hourly with the bus stop located next to the Holiday Inn. Arriva routes 7, 8, and 9 connect various local areas including Shoeburyness, Thorpe Bay, Rochford, and Rayleigh. Budget-friendly but not practical with significant luggage—the train is the better public transport option in almost all cases.

MILE5 Fixed‑Price Chauffeur Transfers from Southend

For travellers who want certainty—no train connections, no waiting for a taxi at the rank, no surge-priced ride-hailing apps—a pre-booked chauffeur is the most reliable option. Southend is 36 miles from central London, meaning a chauffeur journey takes 55-75 minutes depending on traffic via the A127 and A13. All MILE5 prices are fixed, all-inclusive, and include meet-and-greet inside the arrivals area, real-time flight tracking, 60 minutes complimentary waiting time, and luggage assistance. We also serve Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton—see our airport-to-airport transfer service for inter-airport connections. The price you see is the price you pay, whether you land at 2pm on a Tuesday or 11pm on Christmas Eve. MILE5 is based two minutes from Heathrow, and its Heathrow airport chauffeur service is the core operation; Southend is served from that base, and the nearest airport with a full MILE5 hub and route network is Stansted.

Live arrivals and departures are on our Southend flight and taxi information page.

Parking at Southend vs. Booking a Chauffeur

Southend’s Express Pick-up and Drop-off zone is barrierless—just drive in, stop for up to 10 minutes, and pay £8 online by midnight the following day. It’s located opposite the terminal, directly adjacent to the Short Stay car park. If you need longer than 10 minutes, use the Short Stay car park instead to avoid a Parking Charge Notice. For longer trips, Southend’s on-site parking options are: Premium (closest to terminal) at £70 per 24 hours, Budget, formerly Mid Stay (short walk), at £50 per 24 hours, and Standard, formerly Long Stay (3-5 minute walk), at £55 per 24 hours at turn-up rates, less if pre-booked.

At the turn-up rate of £55 per 24 hours, a week in the Standard car park costs £385 (checked October 2026). Pre-booking is usually cheaper, but the airport only shows pre-book prices when you request a quote, so get one for your dates and add fuel before you compare. A return MILE5 chauffeur from central London costs from £400 (£200 × 2). For that you get door-to-door service, no parking hassle, work or sleep time during the 55-75 minute journey, and someone else driving you home when you’re tired after your holiday. Our chauffeur vs Uber comparison lays out the full picture for ride-hailing alternatives, where surge pricing makes costs unpredictable.

The UK’s Fastest-Growing Airport: Southend’s Trajectory

Southend handled 720,000 passengers in 2025—a 150% increase on 2024 and its busiest year since 2019. The airport’s CEO, Jude Winstanley, expects to get close to one million passengers in 2026 as easyJet continues expanding its base. The airport now offers 26 routes across Europe and North Africa, with more than 5,000 commercial movements handled during 2025. August was the busiest month (nearly 90,000 passengers), and Sundays emerged as the busiest day of the week. The airport was also crowned London’s most punctual in 2025—a title that speaks to its operational efficiency. With a catchment of 8.2 million people within an hour’s drive and a dedicated on‑site train station about 100 steps from the terminal, Southend has carved out a genuine niche: the stress‑free alternative for Essex, East London, and East Anglia travellers who’d rather not battle the M25 to reach Heathrow or Gatwick.

Frequently Asked Questions About Southend Airport

Has Southend Airport scrapped the 100ml liquid rule?

Yes. As of February 2026, Southend has fully scrapped the 100ml liquid rule. New C3 CT security scanners allow passengers to carry liquids up to two litres in their cabin baggage. Liquids, laptops, and tablets can all remain in your bag during screening—no need for clear plastic bags or removing items at security. Aerosols larger than 500ml are not permitted in either hand or hold baggage. Note that many destination airports have not yet upgraded their scanners, so you may need to follow the 100ml rule on your return journey.

How early do I need to arrive at Southend Airport?

The airport recommends arriving 2.5 hours before your flight. Given Southend’s famously quick security—typically 1-2 minutes—you may find you have plenty of time in the departure lounge. However, the terminal is not open 24/7; it opens 3 hours before the first scheduled departure. Don’t plan on arriving excessively early or camping overnight.

How long does it take to get through Southend Airport?

Extraordinarily fast. Google’s AI Overview describes typical security times as “only 1-2 minutes.” Anecdotal reports from travellers describe being the only person at security. The airport is London’s most punctual, and its compact size means the maximum walk from check-in to the furthest gate is about 5 minutes. Southend’s train station is directly opposite the terminal, about 100 steps away.

What airlines fly from Southend Airport?

easyJet is the dominant carrier, operating 26 routes in 2026 from its three-aircraft A320neo base, with more added this winter. The top five routes are Palma, Malaga, Amsterdam, Alicante, and Paris. Routes added in 2026 include Jersey (from 30 March), Munich, Ibiza, Barcelona, Berlin, and Naples. Almost all destinations are European leisure routes; there is no long‑haul service from Southend.

How much is parking at Southend Airport?

Standard (formerly Long Stay) parking costs £55 per day at the turn-up rate. Budget (formerly Mid Stay) is £50 per day, and Premium is £70 per day. The Express Pick-up and Drop-off zone charges £8 for up to 10 minutes. Pre‑booking online secures the best rates across all car parks.

How do I get from Southend Airport to London by train?

The railway station is directly opposite the terminal—about 100 steps from arrivals. Greater Anglia services run up to six trains per hour to London Liverpool Street (52 minutes) and Stratford (43 minutes), with connections to the Elizabeth Line. Check Greater Anglia or National Rail Enquiries for first and last train times on your date. Oyster is not valid, but contactless pay as you go is accepted.

Is Southend a good airport to fly from?

For passengers in Essex, East London, and East Anglia, Southend is an excellent airport. It was the UK’s fastest-growing airport in 2025 (150% year-on-year growth), London’s most punctual, and easyJet passengers rank it among the UK’s top airports for satisfaction. Its compact size means minimal walking and ultra-fast security. The main limitation is the lack of long-haul routes—it serves almost exclusively European leisure destinations.

How much is a taxi from Southend Airport to London?

Andrews Taxis is the official taxi service; the airport does not publish a standard fare to central London, so ask for a quote. If a delayed flight lands after the last train, a taxi share scheme operates at £27.50 per person to Liverpool Street (minimum four passengers; if fewer, the £110 total is divided among travellers). A pre‑booked MILE5 chauffeur costs from £200 with fixed pricing, meet‑and‑greet, and flight tracking.

What is the 3‑3‑3 rule for flights?

The 3‑3‑3 rule is a general travel guide: check‑in 3 hours before long‑haul flights, boarding gate closes 30 minutes before departure, and aircraft doors close 10 minutes before departure. At Southend for European flights, the guideline is simpler: arrive 2.5 hours before your flight, be at the gate 30 minutes before, which is when easyJet closes it.

Can I book a return chauffeur transfer to Southend Airport?

Yes. A return MILE5 chauffeur fixes the price for both journeys and includes automatic flight tracking for both flights. For travellers in Essex, East London, or East Anglia who don’t want to deal with the A127 or parking, it’s the most reliable option. Book your return transfer here.
