New Year’s Eve 2026 is a Thursday, and London’s trains and Tube run through the night, but central London closes to traffic from the afternoon for the Thames fireworks and app prices climb from early evening. A pre-booked MILE5 chauffeur costs the same on 31 December as on any other day: Heathrow to central London from £119, Heathrow to Mayfair from £125, Gatwick to Mayfair from £216, met inside arrivals with a name board, flight tracked, 60 minutes of free waiting, and a driver who knows which roads are shut.

MILE5 Limited is a TfL-licensed private hire operator (licence 009161) providing fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur airport transfers across London, with 13+ years and 50,000+ transfers completed. The office is two minutes from Heathrow on Bath Road. This guide covers 31 December 2026 and New Year’s Day 2027: what runs, where the road closures are, what a car costs against a cab or an app, and how to book an airport transfer that lands in the middle of the celebrations.

What Runs on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 2026/27?

Unlike Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve is not a shutdown; it is a squeeze. Last year TfL ran the Tube, Elizabeth line and DLR through the night on 31 December, with special overnight services on most lines, and for the first time in years there was no free travel period: normal fares applied all night. National Rail ran a near-normal Thursday-style service on the 31st and a Sunday-style service on 1 January, with the usual New Year engineering works closing parts of the network. The airport expresses run on both days, on reduced New Year’s Day timetables with later first trains.

Where Are the New Year’s Eve Road Closures, and Will They Affect My Hotel?

The Mayor’s fireworks on the Thames are a ticketed event, and to manage the crowds the roads on both banks between Westminster and Blackfriars close from the afternoon of 31 December until the small hours of 1 January: Victoria Embankment, Whitehall, Parliament Square, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, the South Bank roads and, later in the evening, the Strand and Trafalgar Square. The exact map and timings are published by TfL and the Mayor’s office in December, and they change little from year to year.

For an airport transfer the practical effect is simple. Hotels on Park Lane, in Mayfair, Marylebone, Kensington, the City and Canary Wharf are outside the zone and reachable all night. Hotels on the Strand, at Charing Cross, on the South Bank and around Westminster are inside it: arriving before about 14:00 is straightforward, arriving in the evening means a drop at the edge of the closure and a short walk with the bags, which the chauffeur will make as short as possible. If your flight lands at Heathrow at 19:00 on New Year’s Eve and your hotel is the Savoy, tell us when booking; the driver plans the drop from the north side rather than discovering the barriers on Victoria Embankment. The Heathrow hotel transfers page lists the fixed price to every central London hotel.

New Year Airport Transfer Prices 2026/27

These are MILE5’s fixed prices for the routes booked most around New Year, taken from the live rate card, and they are the same at 23:00 on 31 December as at noon in June. Every fare is per car and includes the meet and greet inside arrivals, flight tracking, 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, luggage help and the airport drop-off charge. There is no New Year’s Eve, late-night or bank holiday surcharge.

Times are typical outside the weekday peaks; on the evening of 31 December allow the upper end for any central London drop. The same price applies in either direction. Every Heathrow route is on the Heathrow rate card, and Gatwick routes on the Gatwick airport transfers page.

Flying Out on New Year’s Day: Getting to the Airport Early on 1 January

The awkward booking is the 07:00 departure on 1 January. The Tube has run all night, so the Piccadilly line will get you to Heathrow, but it is a Sunday-style timetable on New Year’s morning and the first Heathrow Express and Gatwick Express trains start later than on a weekday. Black cabs are scarce at 04:30 on New Year’s Day and carry the £4 extra until 06:00 on 2 January; app prices stay high until the day shift comes on. A chauffeur booked for 04:30 is simply outside the door at 04:30, and the roads at that hour on 1 January are empty. Book the New Year’s Day leg at the same time as the arrival and the price for both is fixed in one confirmation.

How to Book a New Year’s Eve Airport Transfer

  1. Book by the end of November for 31 December and 1 January. Those two days fill first. The booking form takes reservations up to eight hours ahead when a car is free, but New Year’s Eve evening is not the night to rely on that.
  2. Give the flight number and the exact hotel. The flight is tracked so the chauffeur’s start time follows the real landing time. The hotel address decides the approach on the night: inside the closure zone, outside it, or a drop at the barrier.
  3. Meet inside arrivals. At Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City the chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall at the customs exit with your name on a board. No car park, no phone call. The Terminal 5 guide and Gatwick South guide show the arrivals halls.
  4. Staying out for the fireworks? A chauffeur booked as directed by the hour waits outside the closure zone and collects you after midnight, which is the one way of getting home at 00:30 on 1 January without a queue.
  5. Plans change. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup; a time change is an email or a WhatsApp.

Landing on New Year’s Eve? Put the hotel name in the booking notes and we will confirm the drop-off arrangement for the closure zone before the day.

New Year’s Eve Airport Transfer FAQs

Is London transport free on New Year’s Eve 2026?

It was not in 2025/26: TfL ended the free travel period that used to run from 23:45 to 04:30, and normal fares applied all night. Assume the same for 2026/27 unless TfL announces otherwise in December.

Does the Tube run all night on New Year’s Eve?

Yes, on most lines, with special overnight services on the Elizabeth line and DLR as well. Central stations near the river close or go exit-only around the fireworks, and the carriages are packed from mid-evening, which is a poor combination with luggage.

Does the Heathrow Express run on New Year’s Day?

Yes, on a reduced timetable with a later first train than a weekday. The Piccadilly line runs through the night from New Year’s Eve. Check the December timetable before booking an early New Year’s Day flight, or book a car and remove the question.

How much is a taxi from Heathrow on New Year’s Eve?

A MILE5 chauffeur is from £119 to central London, fixed, on any day. A black cab is typically £80 to £120 on the meter plus TfL’s £4 New Year extra after 20:00. An app ride that shows £40 to £55 in the afternoon is commonly £100 or more after 20:00 on the 31st, if a driver accepts it.

Can a car drop me at a hotel on the Strand or the South Bank on New Year’s Eve?

Before the closures come in, yes. From mid-afternoon the roads around Westminster, the Embankment and the South Bank are shut, and the drop is at the nearest open point with a short walk. Tell us the hotel when booking and we will confirm the plan.

How do I get home after the midnight fireworks?

Pre-book a pickup at an agreed point outside the closed zone, or book a chauffeur by the hour who waits for you. The Tube runs all night but the queues at the reopened central stations are long, and app prices peak between midnight and 02:00.

Is the Congestion Charge in force over New Year?

No. It is not charged from Christmas Day to the New Year’s Day bank holiday inclusive; it resumes on 2 January 2027. The ULEZ runs every day except Christmas Day. Both are included in a MILE5 fixed price where they apply.

What about Christmas travel?

Christmas Day is a full shutdown of London’s public transport, which is a different problem from New Year’s Eve; our Christmas airport transfer guide covers 24 to 28 December.
