London City Airport to St Albans Chauffeur – Meet & Greet, Fixed Price

A London City Airport to St Albans transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 55 to 75 minutes door to door and from £198 one way, running in both directions 24/7. MILE5 runs the route to St Albans and the St Albans to London City Airport leg back at the same fixed price, with a driver waiting inside the terminal whichever way you’re travelling.

This journey is one of the routes on our London City airport transfers page, which covers every destination we drive from the airport with the same Mercedes fleet, the same met-at-arrivals pickup and the same fixed-price promise.

St Albans sits 38.8 miles out, generally via the A13 to the M25 before picking up the A1(M) north into Hertfordshire. Off-peak the drive is around 55 minutes; allow closer to 75 during the rush hour, when the M25’s northern arc between the Dartford Crossing and the A1(M) junction is the most likely spot for delay.

A direct train exists but it isn’t quick from London City specifically – more on that below. What it can’t do is meet you at the gate, track your flight, or take you straight to your St Albans address rather than the station. MILE5 is TfL-licensed (licence 009161), has run London City routes for 15+ years and holds a 5-star Google rating, and every St Albans transfer includes the meet-and-greet, the wait, and the airport’s own charges in the one price you’re quoted.

Every St Albans transfer includes meet-and-greet inside London City’s single arrivals hall, flight tracking from the moment you land, 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time, the airport’s own £8 drop-off charge absorbed into the fare, and full luggage handling to the door. Child seats are available on request at an extra charge, and the car runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Where we deliver you in St Albans

Most bookings head into the compact city centre around St Peter’s Street and the Cathedral, or out to Verulamium Park on the western edge of town, where the Roman ruins and museum draw a steady flow of visitors alongside the locals. St Albans is genuinely walkable once you’re there, but the centre has a fair amount of pedestrianisation and one-way routing, so the exact street matters more than the postcode alone; tell your driver where you’re headed and we’ll plan the approach in rather than drop you at the nearest open road.

Market day on St Peter’s Street, held twice a week, is worth knowing about if your pickup or drop-off falls near the centre – stalls close off part of the street and can add a few minutes to the final approach, something a London-based operator wouldn’t necessarily know to plan around.

St Albans: built on Roman Verulamium

St Albans takes its name from Alban, a Roman citizen of Verulamium who sheltered a Christian priest, was arrested in his place after the two swapped cloaks, and was executed for his faith – traditionally dated to the 3rd or 4th century AD, making him Britain’s first recorded Christian martyr. Verulamium itself was one of the largest towns in Roman Britain, its walls once enclosing around 200 acres on the banks of the River Ver, ranking behind only Londinium and Camulodunum, now Colchester, in scale. When the Roman army withdrew and the town declined, its bricks were reused to build the abbey church begun in 1077, which became St Albans Cathedral in 1877 – the Roman masonry is still visible in the walls today, and the cathedral carries the longest nave of any in England.

Verulamium Park now covers much of the old Roman site, with sections of the original city wall still standing and a museum holding artefacts from the excavations, a genuinely rare combination of Roman archaeology and an intact medieval cathedral within walking distance of each other.

Train or MILE5: the honest comparison

Thameslink runs a direct service from St Albans City to central London, taking around 25 minutes to St Pancras – a fast, useful train in its own right. The gap is London City specifically: getting to St Pancras from the airport means the DLR into town, a change, and the reverse on the way back, with your luggage the whole way, on a route where the train itself is the quick part and the connection is the slow one.

For that particular combination – London City at one end, St Albans at the other – a direct car removes both changes in a single booking, and the case runs the same way for a St Albans to London City Airport departure as it does for arriving. If your journey doesn’t touch London City at all, the direct St Pancras train is usually the better call and we’d rather say so.

What years on this route have taught us

The M25’s northern arc, between the Dartford Crossing and the A1(M) junction, is the one stretch that genuinely varies on this route – we build that time into the quote rather than promise the best-case 55 minutes and leave you sitting in traffic. London City’s own hours are worth planning around too: the airport closes overnight and shuts at 1pm on Saturdays, and since there’s no flight scheduled after the evening cut-off, a pre-booked car is the only dependable option at either edge of the operating week.

Book the return leg alongside the outbound if your dates are fixed. It doesn’t change the St Albans to London City Airport price, but it guarantees a car is already allocated to you rather than sourced on the day.

Arriving at London City Airport

London City has a single terminal in the Royal Docks, so there’s no hunting for the right building. Your driver waits inside the compact arrivals hall holding a name board, watching your flight so a delay doesn’t cost you your pickup slot. Check the arrivals board once you’ve landed and your driver will already be in position.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a London City Airport to St Albans transfer?

From £198 one way in an E-Class, £290 in an S-Class or £294 in a V-Class, fixed and all-inclusive whichever direction you’re travelling. The journey normally takes 55 to 75 minutes via the M25 and A1(M).

How much is a St Albans to London City Airport transfer?

The St Albans to London City Airport leg costs the same fixed price as the outbound – £198 in an E-Class, £290 S-Class, £294 V-Class – with your driver tracking your flight and confirmed for the return journey whenever you book it.

Is the train cheaper than a MILE5 transfer to St Albans?

For a journey starting or ending at St Pancras, often yes. For London City specifically, you’re looking at the DLR plus a change onto the Thameslink service in both directions, rather than one direct car.

Does MILE5 still pick up if my flight to London City is delayed?

Yes. Every driver tracks your flight and adjusts pickup automatically, and the 60-minute complimentary wait starts from your actual landing time, not the scheduled one.

Can I book a bigger car for a group or extra luggage?

Yes. The V-Class seats up to seven with luggage space to match, useful for a family trip or a group visiting the Cathedral and Verulamium Park together.

Do you cover Verulamium Park and the museum?

Yes, along with the Cathedral and the wider city centre. Give us the exact postcode when you book.

St Albans sits in MILE5’s North & west cluster alongside transfers to Cambridge, pick-ups in Windsor and transfers to Ascot, plus a car to Bishops Stortford, travelling on to Milton Keynes and our fixed price to Legoland Windsor further afield.
