London City Airport to Southend-on-Sea Chauffeur – Meet & Greet, Fixed Price
A London City Airport to Southend-on-Sea transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 55 to 80 minutes door to door and from £193 one way, running in both directions 24/7. MILE5 runs the route to Southend-on-Sea and the Southend-on-Sea to London City Airport leg back at the same fixed price, with a driver waiting inside the terminal whichever way you’re travelling.
This journey is one of the routes on our luxury London City airport transfer page, which covers every destination we drive from the airport with the same Mercedes fleet, the same met-at-arrivals pickup and the same fixed-price promise.
Southend-on-Sea sits 36.3 miles out along the A13 and A127, the old Southend Arterial Road, and is one of the longer runs in MILE5’s Essex corridor. The A127 is mostly fast dual carriageway, so the journey is usually predictable; off-peak it typically runs 55 to 65 minutes, stretching towards 80 minutes on a summer Saturday when the seafront traffic backs up near Adventure Island.
A direct train from Fenchurch Street is a fair option if you’re travelling light and starting from central London – more on that below. What it can’t do from London City specifically is meet you at the gate, track your flight, or take you straight to your Southend address rather than the station. MILE5 is TfL-licensed (licence 009161), has run London City routes for 15+ years and holds a 5-star Google rating, and every Southend-on-Sea transfer includes the meet-and-greet, the wait, and the airport’s own charges in the one price you’re quoted.

Every Southend-on-Sea transfer includes meet-and-greet inside London City’s single arrivals hall, flight tracking from the moment you land, 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time, the airport’s own £8 drop-off charge absorbed into the fare, and full luggage handling to the door. Child seats are available on request at an extra charge, and the car runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Where we deliver you in Southend-on-Sea
Most bookings on this route head straight for the seafront – Marine Parade, the hotels along Western Esplanade, and the guesthouses around Cliffs Pavilion in Westcliff-on-Sea. Southend’s geography is a long ribbon along the Thames Estuary rather than a compact centre, so the exact stretch matters more here than on a London route; tell us whether you’re headed for the seafront proper, Westcliff, Thorpe Bay or Leigh-on-Sea and we deliver to the door, not a general postcode.
Adventure Island traffic is a genuine local factor in the school holidays – the free theme park sits right on the seafront, and a warm Saturday afternoon can slow the last stretch of Marine Parade noticeably, something a London-based operator wouldn’t necessarily know to plan around.
Southend-on-Sea: home of the world’s longest pleasure pier
Southend Pier reaches 1.34 miles into the Thames Estuary, the longest pleasure pier in the world and a Grade II listed structure the poet Sir John Betjeman once summed up as “the Pier is Southend, Southend is the Pier.” Alongside it, Adventure Island has run free-admission on the seafront since 1976 – no entry charge, pay-per-ride or wristband, with the RAGE rollercoaster the one everyone photographs. Further along, Old Leigh keeps its working fishing-village character, and three of the town’s beaches along the estuary fly Blue Flags.
Travelling as a family changes the maths on this route too. The V-Class seats up to 7 with luggage, and at £286 for the car that’s under £41 a head for a full group heading to Adventure Island or the beach – one car instead of two, one pickup at the terminal rather than a convoy.
Train or MILE5: the honest comparison
C2C runs frequent trains between Southend and London Fenchurch Street – a strong option if your journey starts or ends in central London itself. The gap is London City specifically: it isn’t on that line, so getting between the two means the DLR into town, a change onto the mainline service, and the reverse on the way back, with your luggage the whole way.
For that particular combination – London City at one end, Southend at the other – a direct car removes both changes in one move, and matters more the more luggage or people you’re travelling with. If your journey doesn’t touch London City at all, the direct Fenchurch Street train is usually the better call and we’d rather say so.
What years on this route have taught us
The A127 backs up hardest on Saturday mornings in the school holidays, and we build that extra time into the quote rather than let it surprise you on the day. London City’s own hours matter here too – the airport closes overnight and shuts at 1pm on Saturdays, and since there’s no flight scheduled after the evening cut-off, a pre-booked car is the only dependable option at either edge of the operating week.
Book the return leg alongside the outbound if your dates are fixed. It doesn’t change the Southend-on-Sea to London City Airport price, but it guarantees a car is already allocated to you rather than sourced on the day – genuinely useful on a warm evening when the seafront is busy and flagging down a passing car is not a real option.
Arriving at London City Airport
London City has a single terminal in the Royal Docks, so there’s no hunting for the right building. Your driver waits inside the compact arrivals hall holding a name board, watching your flight so a delay doesn’t cost you your pickup slot. Check the arrivals board once you’ve landed and your driver will already be in position.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a London City Airport to Southend-on-Sea transfer?
From £193 one way in an E-Class, £281 in an S-Class or £286 in a V-Class, fixed and all-inclusive whichever direction you’re travelling. The journey normally takes 55 to 80 minutes on the A127.
How much is a Southend-on-Sea to London City Airport transfer?
The Southend-on-Sea to London City Airport leg costs the same fixed price as the outbound – £193 in an E-Class, £281 S-Class, £286 V-Class – with your driver tracking your flight and confirmed for the return journey whenever you book it.
Is the train cheaper than a MILE5 transfer to Southend-on-Sea?
For a journey starting or ending in central London, often yes. For London City specifically, you’re looking at the DLR plus a change onto the mainline service in both directions, rather than one direct car.
Does MILE5 still pick up if my flight to London City is delayed?
Yes. Every driver tracks your flight and adjusts pickup automatically, and the 60-minute complimentary wait starts from your actual landing time, not the scheduled one.
Can I book a bigger car for a group or extra luggage?
Yes. The V-Class seats up to seven with luggage space to match, useful for a family trip to Adventure Island or a group heading for the seafront together.
Does London City Airport have a train station?
Not a mainline one. The DLR is attached to the terminal, about a minute’s walk from check-in, and connects to the Elizabeth line at Custom House with a change at Canning Town – useful for central London, though it doesn’t reach Southend directly.
Southend-on-Sea sits in MILE5’s Essex and A12 corridor alongside our route to Chelmsford, arriving in Brentwood and pick-ups in Colchester, plus arriving in Basildon and pick-ups in Ipswich further along the corridor. For every other route we run beyond the capital, see our nationwide transfer list.
