London City Airport to Colchester Chauffeur – Meet & Greet, Fixed Price
A London City Airport to Colchester transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes door to door and from £251 one way, running in both directions 24/7. MILE5 runs the route to Colchester and the Colchester to London City Airport leg back at the same fixed price, with a driver waiting inside the terminal whichever way you’re travelling.
This journey is one of the routes on our London City airport transfers page, which covers every destination we drive from the airport with the same Mercedes fleet, the same met-at-arrivals pickup and the same fixed-price promise.
Colchester sits 62.4 miles out along the A12, one of the longest runs in MILE5’s Essex corridor. The A12 is dual carriageway almost the whole way, so the journey is usually more predictable than the shorter London routes; off-peak it typically runs 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30, stretching towards 1 hour 45 around Chelmsford and Colchester’s own rush-hour pinch points.
A direct train from Liverpool Street is genuinely quick if you’re travelling light and starting from central London – more on that below. What it can’t do from London City specifically is meet you at the gate, track your flight, or take you straight to your Colchester address rather than the station. MILE5 is TfL-licensed (licence 009161), has run London City routes for 15+ years and holds a 5-star Google rating, and every Colchester transfer includes the meet-and-greet, the wait, and the airport’s own charges in the one price you’re quoted.

Every Colchester transfer includes meet-and-greet inside London City’s single arrivals hall, flight tracking from the moment you land, 60 minutes of complimentary waiting time, the airport’s own £8 drop-off charge absorbed into the fare, and full luggage handling to the door. Child seats are available on request at an extra charge, and the car runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Where we deliver you in Colchester
Most bookings head into the town centre around the High Street and Colchester Castle, or out to the University of Essex campus at Wivenhoe Park on the southern edge of town – a regular source of academic visitors, open-day parents and graduation-weekend traffic outside the usual pattern. Colchester’s old Roman walls define much of the centre, so your driver will often approach from a specific gate rather than a straight run to the door; tell us the exact postcode and we’ll plan the route in.
Garrison traffic is a genuine local factor too – Colchester has been a British Army garrison town for over 150 years, and troop movements or exercises can affect roads on the eastern side of town on any given day, something a London-based operator wouldn’t necessarily know to plan around.
Colchester: Britain’s oldest recorded town
Colchester’s story starts before the Romans arrived: a Celtic stronghold called Camulodunon stood here in the 1st century BC, and when the Romans invaded in 43AD they built a fortress on the same site, then formally founded it as Colonia Victricensis in 49AD, the first capital of Roman Britain. That makes it, by most accounts, the oldest recorded town in the country. In 60AD Boudica’s revolt burned the town to the ground and the capital moved to London for good, but Colchester was rebuilt behind a new defensive wall that still partly stands today.
The Balkerne Gate, built into that wall, is the largest surviving Roman gateway in Britain, and Colchester Castle, a Norman keep built directly on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, is the largest of its kind in Europe. Nearly two thousand years of continuous habitation have left the town with a genuinely unusual density of history for its size, alongside a modern centre, a university, and a working garrison, all inside the same walls the Romans built.
Train or MILE5: the honest comparison
Greater Anglia runs frequent trains between Colchester and London Liverpool Street, with the fastest around 50 minutes – a strong option if your journey starts or ends in central London itself. The gap is London City specifically: it isn’t on that line, so getting between the two means the DLR into town, a change onto the mainline service, and the reverse on the way back, with your luggage the whole way.
For that particular combination – London City at one end, Colchester at the other – a direct car removes both changes in one move, and matters more the more luggage or people you’re travelling with. If your journey doesn’t touch London City at all, the direct Liverpool Street train is usually the better call and we’d rather say so.
What years on this route have taught us
Colchester is the longest regular booking in our Essex corridor short of the cruise terminals, and the main lesson has been about lead time: because it’s a bigger job for a driver’s day than a short London run, booking a Colchester transfer with reasonable notice gets you a wider choice of pickup slot, especially around university open days and graduation weekends when demand spikes locally. London City’s own hours matter here too – the airport closes overnight and shuts at 1pm on Saturdays, and since there’s no late flight scheduled after the evening cut-off, a pre-booked car is the only dependable option at either edge of the operating week, doubly so on a route this long where there’s no casual alternative waiting outside.
Book the return leg alongside the outbound if your dates are fixed. It doesn’t change the Colchester to London City Airport price, but it guarantees a car is already allocated to you rather than sourced on the day – genuinely useful on a route where a same-day booking has less slack to work with than a short hop into town.
Arriving at London City Airport
London City has a single terminal in the Royal Docks, so there’s no hunting for the right building. Your driver waits inside the compact arrivals hall holding a name board, watching your flight so a delay doesn’t cost you your pickup slot. Check the arrivals board once you’ve landed and your driver will already be in position.

How much is a London City Airport to Colchester transfer?
From £251 one way in an E-Class, £360 in an S-Class or £376 in a V-Class, fixed and all-inclusive whichever direction you’re travelling. The journey normally takes 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 minutes on the A12.
How much is a Colchester to London City Airport transfer?
The Colchester to London City Airport leg costs the same fixed price as the outbound – £251 in an E-Class, £360 S-Class, £376 V-Class – with your driver tracking your flight and confirmed for the return journey whenever you book it.
Is the train cheaper than a MILE5 transfer to Colchester?
For a journey starting or ending in central London, often yes. For London City specifically, you’re looking at the DLR plus a change onto the mainline service in both directions, rather than one direct car.
Does MILE5 still pick up if my flight to London City is delayed?
Yes. Every driver tracks your flight and adjusts pickup automatically, and the 60-minute complimentary wait starts from your actual landing time, not the scheduled one.
Can I book a bigger car for a group or extra luggage?
Yes. The V-Class seats up to seven with luggage space to match, useful for a family trip or a group travelling to the university together.
Do you cover the University of Essex campus?
Yes, including Wivenhoe Park and the surrounding halls of residence. Give us the exact postcode when you book.
Colchester sits in MILE5’s Essex and A12 corridor alongside transfers to Chelmsford, a car to Brentwood and transfers to Southend-on-Sea, plus a car to Basildon and travelling on to Ipswich further up the same corridor, and a chauffeur to Harwich International Port for cruise and ferry connections beyond.
