London City Airport vs Heathrow: Which One Actually Saves You Time

By Ian Silva. Figures checked September 2026. Passenger numbers are CAA 2025.

Heathrow moved 84.5 million passengers in 2025. London City moved 3.7 million, which puts it fifteenth in the UK, behind Belfast. That gap explains almost everything about how the two airports feel, and it is the reason the right answer is not the same for a fortnight in Florida as it is for a Tuesday meeting in Amsterdam.

The decision in five lines

  • Short-haul Europe from east or central London: London City
  • Long haul, or anywhere west of London: Heathrow
  • Travelling with family or watching the fare: Heathrow
  • Same-day return for a meeting: London City, if the route exists
  • Need a backup flight the same day: Heathrow

The short version: if your destination is a major European city and you are starting anywhere east of Hyde Park, City wins on total door-to-door time by a margin that is hard to argue with. If you are flying long haul, travelling as a family, or price is the deciding factor, Heathrow wins and it is not close.

The only comparison that matters: door to gate

Everyone compares flight times and ticket prices. The thing that actually decides which airport you should use is how long it takes from where you are to sitting at the gate, and that is where the two diverge hardest.

At London City the DLR station is outside the terminal door. The airport’s own figures put Canary Wharf at 15 minutes, Stratford at 17, Bank at 27 and Covent Garden at 40, and it says you can get from the entrance to the gate in under ten. There are 15 gates across two short piers. Nothing is far from anything.

At Heathrow you have four terminals across a site the size of a town, an internal transit between them, and a walk to the gate that can run to fifteen or twenty minutes on its own at Terminal 5. The Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express are excellent, but they start from Paddington, which for most of east and central London is a journey before the journey.

On security the gap is measurable rather than anecdotal. The Department for Transport’s passenger survey, published in October 2025, found 81 per cent of London City passengers queued five minutes or less, the best of the seven UK airports surveyed and well ahead of the 56 per cent national figure.

Where Heathrow wins outright

Destinations. City’s runway is 1,508 metres with a steep 5.5 degree approach, so only a small set of aircraft types can use it. That caps the route map at short-haul Europe plus a handful of exceptions. Heathrow goes everywhere. If your destination is not in western Europe, the comparison ends here.

Price. City’s fares run higher on comparable routes, and there is no low-cost carrier presence to drag them down. This is the single most common complaint about the airport and it is a fair one.

Choice and resilience. Heathrow has multiple daily frequencies on most routes and several airlines competing on many of them. If your flight from City is cancelled, the next one may be tomorrow.

Liquids. An odd one, but real. Heathrow and Gatwick are cleared for two-litre containers. London City still runs the 100ml rule, because the two-litre allowance is certified per scanner model and City’s machines are not on the approved list yet.

Families and long trips. More food, more shops, more seating, more places to park a pushchair for an hour. City is built for people who do not want to be there long.

Where London City wins outright

Time, if you are east. From Canary Wharf, the City, Shoreditch, Stratford or anywhere on the DLR, City is thirty to sixty minutes closer door to door than Heathrow. Over a return trip that is most of a working morning.

Predictability. A small airport with a single security hall and 15 gates has fewer ways to go wrong. You are not going to misjudge the walk or end up at the wrong terminal.

Arrivals. This is the underrated one. Landing at City you are off the aircraft, through the hall and into a car or onto the DLR in minutes, because everything is on one level and the walk from stand to kerb is short. Landing at Heathrow the same journey can take forty minutes before you have left the building.

The morning wave. Amsterdam, Zurich, Dublin, Edinburgh and Frankfurt all have early departures built around people who want to be in a meeting by mid-morning and home the same night. That is the airport’s whole design.

Which airport for a business trip to Europe?

City, if the route exists. The case is not really about the flight. It is that a same-day return out of City is genuinely possible from an east or central London office, and out of Heathrow it usually is not. Drop the bag the night before, arrive ninety minutes out, clear security in five, land, and you are in a meeting.

The case flips if you need flexibility. One flight a day to your destination means a cancellation costs you the trip. Two or three a day from Heathrow means it costs you an afternoon. For anything where the meeting cannot move, count the frequencies before you count the minutes.

Why are flights from London City so expensive?

Three reasons, none of them a rip-off. The runway restricts the airport to smaller aircraft, so the cost per seat is higher before anyone has sold a ticket. The slots are limited and heavily weighted to business demand, which pays more. And there is no low-cost operator at City to force prices down, because the aircraft most of them fly cannot land there.

How far apart are they, and can you connect?

About 30 miles by road, an hour or more in traffic and considerably worse at rush hour. There is no rail link that does not involve crossing central London. Self-connecting between the two on the same day is possible but you want a wide margin and your bags will not be through-checked. If you are doing it, book a car rather than hoping, because the M25 and the A13 do not care about your connection. Our London City Airport transfers cover the Heathrow run and every other route in and out.

So which should you pick?

Pick City when you are flying short-haul Europe, travelling light, based east or central, and the clock matters more than the fare. Pick Heathrow when you are flying long haul, want a choice of airlines and times, are travelling with family, or the ticket price is the point. Both are good airports. They are just built for different days.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to fly into Heathrow or London City Airport?

For arrivals into east or central London, City is faster by a wide margin because the DLR is at the door and the walk from aircraft to kerb is short. For anywhere west of London, or if you are arriving long haul, Heathrow.

Is London City Airport the same as Heathrow?

No. They are separate airports about 30 miles apart, under different ownership, with different route networks. London City is in the Royal Docks in east London. Heathrow is west of the city.

Which London airport is better?

It depends entirely on where you are starting and where you are going. City for short-haul Europe from east London. Heathrow for long haul and choice. Gatwick for leisure routes and price. There is no single best one.

Does anyone actually use London City Airport?

3.7 million passengers in 2025, and the mix has shifted. The airport reports that more than half now travel for leisure or to see family rather than for work, which is a change from its reputation.

How long does it take to get from London City Airport to Heathrow?

Allow an hour and a half by road at a quiet time and more at peak. There is no direct rail route; every public transport option runs through central London.

Is London City Airport bigger or smaller than Heathrow?

Far smaller. Heathrow handled roughly 22 times as many passengers in 2025. City has one terminal, one runway and 15 gates.

If London City wins for your trip, the two City routes we drive most are London City to London Bridge and London City to Stratford.
