London City Airport (LCY) is the closest airport to central London, positioned in the historic Royal Docks just 6 miles east of the City’s financial district. Unlike Heathrow, Gatwick, or Stansted, LCY is purpose-built for speed and efficiency – designed specifically for time-conscious business travellers who value proximity over passenger volume. This London City Airport Guide covers everything you need for a seamless journey.
For professionals traveling from West, North, or South London (7-15 miles from LCY), MILE5’s Services costs more than a metered black cab on a clear run (from £64 fixed) whilst providing guaranteed pickup times, flight tracking, luggage assistance, inside-terminal meet services and covering all airport charges. What Makes London City Airport Different in 2026
The Unique LCY Experience:
1. Location Advantage
LCY is the closest London airport to central London. It sits in the Royal Docks in Zone 3, and the airport says it is the closest airport for over half of Londoners. Compare this to:
- Heathrow: 15 miles west (Zone 6)
- Gatwick: 28 miles south (outside London)
- Stansted: 40 miles northeast (outside London)
- Luton: 35 miles north (outside London)
2. Speed & Efficiency
Single-terminal design = minimal walking:
- Check-in to security: 2-minute walk
- Security to furthest gate: 5-minute walk
- All gates use walk-boarding (step directly from terminal onto aircraft—no buses or long jet bridges)
- Security queue: five minutes or less for 81 per cent of passengers (DfT survey, the best of seven UK airports)
- Baggage claim to exit: 3-minute walk
3. Walk-Boarding Reality
Every gate at LCY uses walk-boarding—passengers walk across the tarmac directly to aircraft stairs. No jet bridges, no buses. This means:
- Weather exposure: Rain, wind, cold affects boarding (bring umbrella during winter)
- Mobility considerations: Stairs required at every gate (ambulift available for wheelchair users—book via airline 48hrs ahead)
- Faster turnarounds: Aircraft boarding/deplaning takes 5-8 minutes vs 15-20 at larger airports
4. Runway Restrictions
LCY’s 1,508-meter runway is one of Europe’s shortest for commercial operations. Combined with steep 5.5° approach angle (vs standard 3°), this limits aircraft types:
- Permitted: Embraer E190/195, Airbus A220, ATR 72, Bombardier Dash 8
- Not yet permitted: larger jets such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320neo. From March to May 2026 the airport consulted on an extra, slightly shallower 4.49° approach that would let specifically authorised new-generation aircraft such as the A320neo land, as part of its growth towards nine million passengers a year.
- Result: Smaller aircraft = fewer seats = higher fares = business traveller focus
Airlines & Destinations from LCY (October 2026)
The airport lists over 30 destinations, all in the UK, Ireland and Europe (airport website, checked October 2026).
Airlines at London City:
- British Airways (BA Cityflyer): the main operator, flying a fleet of Embraer 190s to most of the network
- KLM: Amsterdam (British Airways also flies the route)
- Lufthansa (operated by Air Dolomiti): Frankfurt
- SWISS: Zurich
- ITA Airways: Milan (British Airways also flies to Milan)
- Luxair: Luxembourg
- Aurigny: Guernsey
- Loganair: Isle of Man
Year-round British Airways routes: Amsterdam, Belfast, Berlin, Dublin, Edinburgh, Florence, Glasgow, Ibiza, Madrid, Malaga, Milan, Palma and Rotterdam.
Seasonal routes: for winter skiers, Innsbruck runs from December to March, and Chambéry and Geneva are also listed as seasonal. Barcelona, Bergerac, Faro, Nice, Olbia, San Sebastián, Skiathos, Split, Thessaloniki and Toulon are seasonal too, and mostly fly in summer, so check British Airways’ timetable before planning a winter trip. Toulon was the new route for summer 2026 and ran from 23 May to 1 September.
No Transatlantic Service: BA’s London City to New York JFK flight was suspended in 2020 and does not appear on the airport’s current destination list.
Corporate Travel Tip: For business travellers making European connections from LCY, MILE5 corporate account services provide monthly invoicing for regular travellers. Eliminate expense report hassles with fixed pricing and automatic journey tracking.
When to Arrive at London City Airport
The airport says two hours, and its own wording is that you should not arrive more than two hours ahead. Ninety minutes is comfortable with hand luggage outside the weekday peaks of 06:30 to 09:00 and 16:30 to 19:30. Check-in desks open two hours before departure and not before, and in the Department for Transport’s 2024 passenger survey 81 per cent of LCY passengers queued five minutes or less at security, the best of the seven UK airports measured.
Full detail, including bag drop times, the overnight drop the night before, fast track and the mornings when it goes wrong: how early to arrive at London City Airport. For the busy and quiet hours across the week, see how busy London City Airport gets.
Complete LCY Terminal Layout & Navigation
Ground Floor (Arrivals & Check-In):
Landside (Pre-Security):
- Check-In Desks: Airline counters on right side as you enter (British Airways, KLM, Swiss, etc.)
- Self-Service Kiosks: Available for most airlines (print boarding passes, bag tags)
- Bag Drop: Dedicated lanes for pre-checked-in passengers
- Facilities: WHSmith, Pret A Manger, Soul & Grain
- Services: Bureau de change, ATMs, left luggage (limited hours), travel insurance kiosks
- Special Assistance: Mobility assistance desk near entrance (must book 48hrs via airline)
Arrivals Hall:
- Baggage Reclaim: Small claim area (average wait: 15-25 minutes—faster than larger airports)
- Customs: Green/red channel
- Meeters & Greeters: Compact arrivals area — your MILE5 chauffeur meets you here with a name board
- Ground Transport: Taxi rank outside, DLR station entrance adjacent to terminal
First Floor (Departures – Airside):
Security Checkpoint:
- Standard Security: Multiple lanes, most passengers queue five minutes or less
- 2026 Status: CT scanners are installed, but the 100ml liquid rule still applies at London City Airport (as of September 2026). Liquids must still be in containers of 100ml or less, but at London City they stay inside your hand luggage, and so do laptops and tablets: the CT scanners mean nothing comes out at the tray.
Main Departures Lounge (Post-Security):
- Shopping: Aelia Duty Free, Boots, InMotion, WHSmith
- Dining: Hithes London Bar and Eatery, Juniper & Co, Big Penny Brews, Pret A Manger, Soul & Grain, Caffè Nero
- Gates 2-24 (15 gates on two piers): All within 5-minute walk from security
- Facilities: Free Wi-Fi (fast, reliable), charging points throughout, prayer room, accessible toilets
The Walking Reality:
LCY is refreshingly small. From check-in desk to furthest gate = 7 minutes maximum. This is the airport’s greatest advantage for time-pressed business travellers—no 20-minute sprints to distant gates like at Heathrow Terminal 2 or Heathrow Terminal 3.
London City Airport Liquid Rules and Security (September 2026)
London City still applies the 100ml limit. Every liquid, gel and aerosol must be in a container of 100ml or less with the size printed on the label, but nothing has to come out of your bag: liquids, laptops and tablets all stay packed and there is no clear plastic bag. Anything over 100ml goes in the hold unless it is medicine with a prescription or baby food. Heathrow and Gatwick allow two litres; London City, Stansted and Luton do not.
Why the rule came back after LCY dropped it in 2023, what gets binned at the lane, and the medical and baby-milk exceptions: the full London City Airport liquid rules.
Shopping & Dining at London City Airport (2026)
The list is short, and most of it is after security, in the departure lounge the airport upgraded in 2024. These are the outlets on the airport’s own shop and eat pages, checked October 2026.
Landside (Pre-Security):
- Pret A Manger: ground floor, before security
- Soul & Grain: grab-and-go food and coffee (there is another one airside)
- WHSmith: in the check-in hall (another one airside)
Airside (Post-Security):
Food & Drink:
- Hithes London Bar and Eatery: sit-down meals and a bar
- Juniper & Co: premium bar and restaurant
- Big Penny Brews: café bar from the Walthamstow brewer, with pastries, bagels and charcuterie boards
- Pret A Manger: by Gate 3
- Soul & Grain and Caffè Nero: coffee and food to go
Shops: Aelia Duty Free, Boots (including the meal deal), InMotion for headphones and chargers, and WHSmith.
Hours follow the flight schedule. On Saturdays most outlets close by early afternoon, and Hithes does not open at all.
Is There a Lounge at London City Airport?
Not yet. London City has no passenger lounge. Its first, run by Aspire (Swissport’s lounge brand), is being built in the departure lounge and the airport expects it to open by early 2027.
It will not belong to any airline: any passenger will be able to pay online or at the door, with an annual membership planned later. Prices have not been announced.
Getting to/from London City Airport (2026 Transport Guide)
Live arrivals and departures, plus taxi and drop-off details, are on our London City flight and taxi information page; the options below cover getting to and from the terminal.
DLR (Docklands Light Railway) – Best for Locals:
London City Airport DLR Station:
- Location: Directly attached to terminal (1-minute walk from check-in)
- Journey Times: Canary Wharf 15 mins, Stratford 17 mins, Bank 27 mins, Covent Garden 40 mins (airport figures)
- Frequency: Every 8-15 minutes (05:30-00:30 Mon-Sat, reduced Sunday service)
- 2026 Fares: £3.30-£3.90 single to Zone 1 (Oyster/contactless), cheaper with daily/weekly caps
- Connections: Integrates with London Underground, Elizabeth Line, National Rail
DLR Reality Check:

Black Cab (Licensed London Taxi):
- 2026 Pricing: £35-£45 to City of London, £45-£65 to West End, £55-£75 to West London (Kensington, Chelsea)
- Availability: Taxi rank outside terminal (always available)
- Journey Times: 15-25 mins to City (traffic dependent), 25-40 mins to West End
- Advantages: Can use bus lanes, driver knowledge of London streets
- Disadvantages: Metered pricing (no fixed rate), with higher tariffs in the evening, overnight and at weekends
Uber/Bolt (Ride-Hailing):
- 2026 Pricing: £30-£55 to City/Canary Wharf, £40-£70 to West End, £50-£85 to West London
- Surge Pricing Risk: Can reach £80-£120 during Monday morning/Friday evening peaks
- Pickup Location: The Pick-Up car park, a short walk from the terminal (follow the Pick-Up signs). It costs £10 for up to 20 minutes, £16.90 for 20-30 minutes and £21.90 for 30-60 minutes (checked October 2026).
- Uber Reserve: Book 2+ hours ahead for fixed price (£8-£12 premium but eliminates surge risk)
For detailed comparison of ride-hailing services for airport transfers, see our Uber vs Bolt guide.
Bus Services:
- Route 473: North Woolwich – Stratford (connects to Elizabeth Line, Central Line, DLR)
- Route 474: Manor Park – Canning Town (connects to Jubilee Line, DLR)
- 2026 Fare: £1.75 single, rising to £1.85 on 1 November 2026 (Hopper fare allows unlimited bus/tram journeys within 1 hour)
- Journey Times: 20-40 minutes depending on route/traffic
- Reality: Budget option but not practical with luggage or for business travellers

Connections to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton are on the airport-to-airport hub.

Parking at London City Airport (2026 Options)
The official car park is on site, a short walk from the terminal, with number plate recognition at the barrier. Prices vary with how far ahead you book and how long you stay, so get a quote on the airport’s official parking site rather than relying on a fixed figure. Turning up without a booking costs more.
Parking Tips (2026):
- Book early: Pre-booking opens up to a year ahead, and booking ahead is usually cheaper than the drive-up rate. The minimum pre-booked stay is one day, and the latest you can book is six hours before you arrive.
- Short waits: The Main Stay car park gives the first hour free. The Pick-Up car park is £10 for up to 20 minutes, £16.90 for up to 30 minutes and £21.90 for up to an hour (checked October 2026).
- Compare with chauffeur: For 4-7 day trips from West/North/South London, a MILE5 return transfer (£186-£204 round trip from Westminster or Kensington) is worth pricing against a week’s parking, and it takes the driving out of the trip.
Drop-Off & Pick-Up:
- Drop-Off Zone: £8 for up to 5 minutes, then £1 per additional minute, with a maximum stay of 10 minutes (introduced 6 January 2026). London City Airport was the last major London airport to introduce a drop-off charge.
- Location: Directly outside terminal entrance
- ANPR Cameras: Automatic number plate recognition—pay online by midnight the following day
- Blue Badge Holders: 10 minutes free once registered with the airport’s drop-off payment site
Special Assistance at London City Airport
How to Arrange:
- Book through your AIRLINE (not airport) at least 48 hours before flight
- Call airline directly or arrange during online booking
- Assistance desk located near terminal entrance
Services Available:
- Wheelchair provision (manual or powered)
- Escort through check-in, security, to gate
- Priority boarding coordination
- Ambulift for boarding (all gates use stairs—essential for wheelchair users)
Important: Walk-up assistance available but not guaranteed during peak times. Always pre-book. If you have mobility concerns and need accessible vehicle transport, MILE5 offers wheelchair-accessible vehicles—contact us when booking with any specific requirements you need.
LCY Insider Tips (2026 Edition)
- Don’t Arrive Too Early: Check-in opens only 2 hours before departure. Landside facilities are limited. Arriving 3+ hours early = sitting in basic arrivals hall.
- Walk-Boarding = Weather Exposure: Every gate uses outdoor aircraft stairs. Winter travelers: bring umbrella, wear practical shoes (no heels on wet tarmac).
- No Boarding Announcements: LCY is a silent airport and makes no boarding calls. Go straight through security and keep an eye on the flight information screens for your gate. Miss the screen = miss your flight.
- Boots Meal Deal: The airside Boots sells sandwiches, snacks and drinks as part of the Boots Meal Deal, a cheap alternative to a sit-down meal.
- Free Fast Wi-Fi: Network: “LCY Free WiFi”. No registration, no password. Actually fast (50Mbps+). Best free airport Wi-Fi in London.
- No Lounge Yet: London City has no passenger lounge; its first, run by Aspire, is due in 2027.
- DLR = East London Only: Great for Docklands, Canary Wharf, Stratford. Terrible for West/North/South London (multiple changes with luggage).
- Small Aircraft = Limited Overhead Space: LCY uses Embraer E190/A220—smaller overhead bins than Boeing 737/A320. Gate-check bags more common. Pack light or check luggage.
Common LCY Problems (& Solutions)
Problem: “My Flight’s at 7 AM Monday—How Do I Get There?”
Solution: First DLR train reaches LCY around 5:30 AM weekdays, which leaves little margin for a 7 AM flight. Options: (1) Stay at a nearby hotel on Sunday night (the airport lists the Courtyard by Marriott London City Airport as a 7-minute walk), (2) Pre-book MILE5 chauffeur for 4:30-5:00 AM pickup (guaranteed arrival), (3) Black cab (if you can find one at 5 AM).
Problem: “I Live in West London—Public Transport Takes 90 Minutes”
Solution: This is why business travelers from West/North/South London use professional chauffeur services. From £102 fixed (Kensington) vs £3.90 Oyster saves 20-30 minutes and eliminates luggage stress. For 6:30 AM flights, the first DLR arrives too late for check-in.
Problem: “Airport Closed Overnight—Where Do I Sleep?”
Solution: LCY closes 22:00-04:45 on weekdays, and from 13:00 on Saturday until 10:30 on Sunday. Cannot sleep in terminal. Nearest hotels on the airport’s own list: Courtyard by Marriott London City Airport (7-minute walk), and Holiday Inn Express London ExCeL and Novotel London ExCeL (about 5 minutes by taxi or car).
Problem: “Connecting Between LCY and Heathrow/Gatwick”
Solution: No direct public transport. Options: (1) MILE5 inter-airport transfer (£257 Heathrow-LCY fixed, Gatwick-LCY quoted on booking; fixed pricing), (2) Uber (£80-£180 with surge risk), (3) Train via central London (90-120 mins, multiple changes with luggage). For business travelers on tight connections, professional transfer eliminates risk.

People Also Ask
How much time is needed at London City Airport?
90 minutes is sufficient for most European flights during off-peak times. Arrive 2 hours before your flight during peak periods (Monday mornings 5:00-9:00 AM, Friday evenings 4:00-7:00 PM). Check-in opens 2 hours before departure and closes 30 minutes before—LCY enforces this strictly.
What is the airport 45 minute rule?
The “45-minute rule” refers to check-in and bag drop deadlines. At LCY, check-in closes 30 minutes before departure for most airlines (not 45). However, many other UK and international airports enforce a 40-45 minute cutoff for European flights and 60 minutes for long-haul. Always confirm with your specific airline.
Is the 100ml rule still in place at London City Airport?
Yes. As of September 2026, London City Airport still enforces the 100ml liquid rule. Liquids must be in containers of 100ml or less, but they stay inside your hand luggage: LCY does not ask for a separate clear plastic bag. Despite having installed CT scanners, LCY has not yet scrapped the 100ml restriction. Always check the official LCY website before travelling as rules may change.
How early should I get to London City Airport?
Arrive 90 minutes before departure for off-peak flights (midday Tuesday-Thursday, after 7:30 PM weekdays, Sunday afternoons). Arrive 2 hours before for peak times (Monday mornings, Friday evenings, Sunday evenings, winter ski weekends). Check-in opens only 2 hours before departure—arriving earlier means waiting in limited landside facilities.
Does London City have new security scanners?
Yes. London City Airport was actually the first major UK airport to fully implement next-generation CT security scanners, completing the rollout in 2023. However, the 100ml liquid rule remains in effect at LCY as of September 2026. The airport says the scanners halved average queue times.
Is toothpaste classed as liquid when flying?
Yes. Toothpaste is classified as a gel/liquid by UK airport security. At LCY, toothpaste must be in a container of 100ml or less, and it can stay inside your hand luggage.
Do mascara and lipstick count as liquids?
Mascara is classified as a liquid and must follow the 100ml rule at airports enforcing it (including LCY). Lipstick (solid stick form) is NOT classified as a liquid and has no restrictions. Liquid lipsticks and glosses count as liquids.
Why is deodorant not allowed on planes?
Deodorant IS allowed on planes. Stick/roll-on deodorants have no restrictions. Aerosol deodorants are permitted in containers up to 100ml at airports enforcing the rule (like LCY). The misconception comes from aerosol restrictions and the fact that some countries classify spray deodorants differently.
Where should I pack my tweezers for flying?
Tweezers are permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage. They are not considered sharp or dangerous enough to be restricted by UK airport security.
Why is nail polish not allowed on planes?
Nail polish IS allowed on planes. At airports enforcing the 100ml liquid rule (like LCY), nail polish bottles must be 100ml or less, though at LCY they stay inside your hand luggage rather than in a separate clear bag. Nail polish is classified as a liquid. At airports that have scrapped the 100ml rule (like Heathrow and Gatwick), bottles up to 2 litres are permitted.
Can you take your own sandwiches on a plane?
Yes. Solid foods including sandwiches, crisps, fruit, and cakes are permitted through security. At LCY, solid foods have no restrictions and can remain in your bag. Liquid-like fillings (runny chutney, yogurt) must follow the 100ml liquid rule.
What toiletries are not allowed on a plane?
At LCY (where the 100ml rule applies), any liquid, gel, or aerosol toiletries over 100ml per container are prohibited in hand luggage. This includes large shampoo bottles, full-size toothpaste tubes, and large perfume bottles. Solid toiletries (soap bars, solid deodorant) have no restrictions.
Why avoid seat 11A on a plane?
On many Boeing 737 aircraft (commonly used by Ryanair), seat 11A is a window seat that doesn’t actually have a window. The missing window is due to the position of the air conditioning ducting. This doesn’t apply to Embraer E190/E195 or Airbus A220 aircraft used at LCY.
Is it better to wear leggings or jeans on a plane?
Leggings are generally more comfortable than jeans for flying. Denim can become constricting as your body expands slightly from reduced cabin pressure. Loose, stretchy fabrics are recommended for circulation and comfort, especially on longer flights.
What food cannot go through airport security?
At LCY, liquid or semi-liquid foods over 100ml per container must go in checked baggage—this includes soups, stews, yogurt, spreads, and soft cheeses. Solid foods like sandwiches, biscuits, and fruit have no restrictions.
What suitcase do flight attendants say not to use?
Flight attendants often advise against hard-shell suitcases with four “spinner” wheels that protrude far from the base—the wheels are prone to snapping off during rough baggage handling. Two-wheeled soft-sided cases are recommended for durability.
What is London City Airport like?
London City Airport is compact, efficient, and purpose-built for business travellers. It has a single terminal with 15 gates, all within a 5-minute walk from security. Facilities are modest but functional, with the advantage of being the closest airport to central London (Zone 3, Royal Docks).
How do I check-in at London City Airport?
Check-in desks are on the ground floor, right side as you enter. Most airlines offer online check-in 24-48 hours before departure. Self-service kiosks are available for printing boarding passes and bag tags. Dedicated bag drop lanes exist for pre-checked-in passengers. Check-in opens 2 hours before departure.
Where do I put my deodorant when flying?
Roll-on and stick deodorants can be packed in either carry-on or checked baggage with no restrictions. Aerosol deodorants must follow the 100ml rule at LCY: containers must be 100ml or less, left inside your hand luggage rather than a separate bag.
Does toothpaste count as a liquid in the UK?
Yes. Toothpaste is classified as a gel and follows liquid rules at all UK airports. At LCY, toothpaste must be in a container of 100ml or less, and it can stay inside your hand luggage.
Can you take tweezers in hand luggage?
Yes. Tweezers are permitted in hand luggage and checked baggage. They are not considered sharp or dangerous enough to be restricted.
Can you take a sandwich through airport security?
Yes. Solid foods like sandwiches are permitted through security at all UK airports. At LCY, sandwiches can remain in your bag—no need to remove them. Liquid fillings (runny chutney, yogurt) must follow the 100ml rule.
Can I keep my luggage at the airport and go out?
LCY has limited left luggage facilities with restricted hours. If you have a long layover and want to explore London, the DLR reaches Bank in about 27 minutes. However, LCY is not a 24-hour airport—it closes overnight, so this is only feasible during daytime layovers.
Is lipstick considered a liquid when flying?
Solid lipstick (stick form) is NOT considered a liquid and has no restrictions at UK airport security. Liquid lipsticks, glosses, and lip balms in pots/tubes ARE classified as liquids and must follow the 100ml rule at airports still enforcing it (including LCY).

Final Advice: Making LCY Work for You
London City Airport is purpose-built for efficiency. The biggest mistakes business travelers make:
- Arriving too early (check-in opens 2 hours before, not earlier)
- Forgetting walk-boarding weather reality (umbrella essential in winter)
- Assuming DLR works from all London areas (it’s East London-focused)
- Missing boarding call (no announcements—watch screens religiously)
- Booking Uber for early flights (surge pricing + DLR not running = pre-booked chauffeur eliminates risk)
Smart business travelers verify operating hours, arrive 90 minutes for off-peak flights (2 hours peak), eat strategically (most food is after security), and book transport in advance from West/North/South London locations. We hope this London City Airport Guide has given you everything you need for a seamless journey.
