Arriving in London to study in January or September 2027? Most London universities do not run free airport pickups any more, and the few that do cover one day, one airport and university halls only. A pre-booked MILE5 chauffeur meets you inside the arrivals hall at Heathrow with a name board, waits 60 minutes free while you clear immigration, loads every case and drives you to your halls for a fixed price: Heathrow to Bloomsbury from £157, Heathrow to South Kensington from £138, Heathrow to Royal Holloway from £96. A parent or agent can book and pay from abroad.
MILE5 Limited is a TfL-licensed private hire operator (licence 009161) providing fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur airport transfers across London, with 15+ years and 50,000+ transfers completed. The office is two minutes from Heathrow on Bath Road, and every September and January we collect students for UCL, King’s, LSE, Imperial, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway and the rest of the London group. This guide compares every way of getting from the airport to your accommodation, with current prices.
Updated October 2026. Prices are MILE5’s live rate card on 12 October 2026 and booking-form quotes on 12 October 2026; public transport fares are the operators’ published 2026 prices.
January 2027 Intake: Arriving Without a University Pickup
If your course starts in January or February (common for Master’s programmes and the business schools), most universities run no airport pickup for January starters, it is dark by around 16:30, and the Piccadilly line with wet luggage is a poor introduction to London. Everything in this guide applies in January exactly as in September: the same fixed prices, the same meet inside arrivals, the same 60 minutes’ waiting. Demand is lower than in September, so booking a week ahead is comfortable.
Check the rail engineering dates before you plan around a train. Network Rail’s engineering closure on the Paddington lines, which carry the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line, runs until Sunday 3 January 2027, and National Rail had not published the Heathrow Express timetable from 31 December onwards when we checked in October 2026. The Piccadilly line is closed to Heathrow on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 January 2027, and if you land at Gatwick, there are no trains between Gatwick and East Croydon on Sunday 10 January 2027. Our Heathrow rail closures tracker lists every date as it is confirmed.
What Is the Cheapest Way From Heathrow to a London University?
The cheapest is the Piccadilly line at £5.90, then the Elizabeth line at a flat £15.50 to Paddington, Bond Street, Farringdon or Liverpool Street, then the National Express coach from £11.20 to Victoria. All three work well if you have one case and a rucksack and you land in daylight. They stop working well when you have two or three large cases, a 12-hour flight behind you and a walk at the far end, which describes most first-time arrivals. The table below puts the real current costs side by side for a typical route, Heathrow to the Bloomsbury and King’s Cross university district.
| Option | Cost (one student) | Door to door | Luggage | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University free transfer | £0 | 90–150 min (shared coach, waits for other flights) | Limited | Where it exists at all it runs on one set date, from Heathrow only, to university halls only |
| Piccadilly line | £5.90 | 75–95 min | Very limited | Stairs at most central stations, a change for Bloomsbury, packed at the evening peak |
| Elizabeth line + taxi | £15.50 + £15–20 | 60–80 min | Moderate | Flat £15.50 fare since March 2026, peak or off-peak; you still need a cab from Paddington or Farringdon with the bags |
| Heathrow Express + taxi | £26 (from £10 advance) + £15–20 | 55–70 min | Moderate | 15 minutes to Paddington, then the same taxi queue as the Elizabeth line; not from Terminal 4 |
| National Express coach | From £11.20 | 40 min to Victoria, then onward | Good (hold) | Up to 77 coaches a day from the Central Bus Station (T2/T3) and outside T4 and T5; Victoria is not near any campus |
| Uber or Bolt | £40–55 off-peak, £80–110 at peaks | 50–75 min | Varies by car | Pick-up is in the short-stay car park, a 10–15 minute walk with your cases; start-of-term arrival banks are peak pricing |
| Black cab from the rank | Metered, typically £80–120 | 50–75 min | Good | The meter keeps running in M4 traffic; TfL’s fares page still shows an older £45 to £85 Heathrow estimate, so do not budget on it |
| MILE5 pre-booked chauffeur | From £157 to Bloomsbury, fixed | 50–65 min | 3 cases (E-Class) to 8 (V-Class) | Met inside arrivals with a name board, 60 minutes’ free waiting, flight tracked, all airport charges included. The price is per car, not per person |
The honest summary: if you are travelling light and land in daylight, the Elizabeth line is the cheapest sensible way in. If you are carrying a year of your life in three suitcases, you land after dark, or it is your first time in London, the fixed-price car is the one that takes you from the arrivals hall to the door of your halls without a change of train, a taxi queue or a map. The train versus Uber versus chauffeur comparison goes through the costs in more detail.
Safety and Peace of Mind on the First Journey
For most international students the drive from the airport is the first hour in a new country, often after a long-haul flight and before a UK phone works. These are the problems a pre-booked chauffeur takes away, and the reasons parents most often give us for booking one.
- A licensed, checked driver. MILE5 is a TfL-licensed private hire operator, and every chauffeur holds a TfL private hire driver’s licence, which requires an enhanced DBS check. Anyone in the arrivals hall offering a ride without a booking is touting, which is illegal in London.
- Met inside, not in a car park. The chauffeur waits at the customs exit with the student’s name on a board, so there is no searching a dark car park and no doubt about which car to get into.
- No working phone needed on landing. The pickup follows the flight, so a student whose phone has no signal yet only has to walk out and look for the board.
- Late and early arrivals. The long-haul banks from Asia and the Gulf land between 05:00 and 07:00 and after 21:00, when a first trip across an unfamiliar city with three cases is at its hardest. The car runs 24 hours a day.
- Heavy luggage. A year of belongings rarely fits in one case. The chauffeur loads the boot and unloads at the entrance of the halls, with no station stairs or crowded carriages in between.
- Jet lag and delays. If the flight is late, the pickup moves with it, and the 60 minutes of free waiting starts at landing, so a long immigration queue costs nothing extra.
- A known price, paid in advance. The fixed price is shown in pounds before anyone pays and does not change with traffic, the time of day or a delayed flight. There is no meter and no surge.
- Parents kept informed. The confirmation goes to every email address on the booking, including a parent’s, and the chauffeur’s details are shared with the student before landing.
Do London Universities Still Offer Free Airport Pickups?
Mostly not, and the marketing is often out of date. UCL’s “Welcome Service at Heathrow” is a team of student ambassadors at the terminal exits who point you towards the Elizabeth line, the Piccadilly line or a taxi; it was never a lift into town, and UCL’s own arrivals page for International Student Welcome Week in September 2026 made no mention of airport transport at all. King’s, LSE and Imperial publish directions, not pickups.
Where a free service does exist it is narrow. The University of Roehampton, one of the few London universities still running one, set out its terms for September 2026 plainly: a free transfer from Heathrow on Wednesday 16 September 2026 only, run as a transport voucher contribution, for international students living in university accommodation, booked in advance through an online form, and the university “will not be covering transport fees for arrivals outside of the set date”. Outside London the picture is similar: Anglia Ruskin’s pickup, for example, ran on a single day (9 September 2026). Universities that run a pickup typically offer one day in September, so check your own university’s arrivals page for its 2027 date before booking a flight around it.
Who has to arrange their own transfer
- Anyone not landing on the set day. Flights booked around fares, not university timetables, rarely line up with a single set date.
- Students in private halls or rented flats. Unite, iQ, Chapter and private landlords are outside every free scheme.
- Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City arrivals. Free services are Heathrow only.
- January and February starters. Most universities run no airport pickup for the spring intake.
- Students arriving with parents. University coaches are for the student alone.
- Late and early flights. Most schemes operate daytime hours; the long-haul banks from Asia and the Gulf land at 05:00 to 07:00 and after 21:00.
If you think you qualify, use the free service; it is free for a reason. If there is any doubt, book a backup with a free cancellation window rather than gambling on a coach that may not be there.
Fixed Prices From Heathrow to London Universities (October 2026)
These are MILE5’s current fixed prices from any Heathrow terminal to the main campus and halls areas. Every price is per car, not per person, and includes the meet and greet inside arrivals, flight tracking, 60 minutes of free waiting after landing, luggage help and the airport charges. The E-Class carries up to three passengers and three large cases; the S-Class the same with more room; the V-Class up to seven passengers and eight cases, which is the car for a student travelling with parents or for three friends sharing.
| University and area | Allow | Mercedes E-Class | Mercedes S-Class | Mercedes V-Class MPV |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UCL, SOAS, Birkbeck (Bloomsbury) | 50–65 min | From £157 | From £233 | From £235 |
| Central Saint Martins, UCL halls at Euston and King’s Cross | 50–65 min | From £158 | From £234 | From £236 |

| Imperial College (South Kensington) | 40–55 min | From £138 | From £170 | From £171 |
| King’s Waterloo campus (Stamford Street halls) | 50–65 min | From £153 | From £225 | From £226 |
| University of Westminster (Marylebone and Regent Street) | 45–60 min | From £155 | From £230 | From £232 |

Times are typical outside the weekday peaks; the price is fixed whatever the traffic does. For halls not listed, enter the postcode on the booking form for an instant quote, or see every Heathrow destination on one price list and the Heathrow to central London area guide.
Arriving at Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or London City Instead?
Plenty of students on European connections or budget carriers land somewhere other than Heathrow, and those airports are further from the campuses. King’s Cross is the reference point below because UCL, SOAS, Central Saint Martins and most of the Bloomsbury halls sit within a mile of it.
| Route | Mercedes E-Class | Mercedes S-Class | Mercedes V-Class MPV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gatwick to King’s Cross | From £233 | From £336 | From £349 |
| Stansted to King’s Cross | From £190 | From £277 | From £281 |
| Luton to King’s Cross | From £191 | From £279 | From £283 |
| London City to King’s Cross | From £92 | From £124 | From £122 |
Gatwick and Luton are the two where the train is a strong alternative for a light traveller (Thameslink runs from both straight into St Pancras). Stansted’s coach and train both end a taxi ride from the halls. The Luton airport guide and the Stansted airport guide cover the drop-off charges, the DART and the Stansted Express, and anyone changing planes between London airports should start with the inter-airport transfers page.
How the Pickup Works When You Land at Heathrow
- Book online with your flight number. Enter the flight, the terminal, your halls address and how many of you are travelling. The price is confirmed on screen and by email; it does not change if the flight is late. Give us at least a few hours’ notice, and if you arrive in the main September intake weeks, book as soon as the flight is ticketed.
- We track the flight. The pickup time follows the actual landing time, not the scheduled one. If the aircraft is held on the ground in Delhi or Lagos for three hours, the chauffeur’s start time moves with it.
- Take your time through immigration. The 60 minutes of free waiting starts when the wheels touch down. Many first-time arrivals have to see an officer rather than use the eGates, and queues at Terminals 2 and 3 can run long at the start of term. The chauffeur knows this.
- Walk out of customs and look for your name. The chauffeur is inside the arrivals hall, at the exit from customs, holding a board with your name on it. No car park, no phone calls, no finding “the meeting point”. The Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 guides show each arrivals hall.
- The chauffeur takes the trolley. Cases go in the boot, you go in the back, and the car leaves from the terminal forecourt. Bloomsbury is 50 to 65 minutes away outside the peaks.
- Dropped at the door of your halls. Not the nearest main road: the reception entrance, with the bags on the pavement beside you.
How this differs from an app booking is covered in our Heathrow chauffeur versus Uber guide, and the Uber versus Bolt comparison explains the short-stay car park pick-up rule both apps work under.
Booking for Someone Else: Parents, Agents and University Staff
A large share of the student bookings we take in September are made by someone who is not travelling: a parent in Lagos, Mumbai or Shenzhen, an education agent handling a group, or an international office booking for a scholarship cohort. The process is built for that.
- Book and pay from abroad in pounds. The fixed price is shown before you pay, so there is no meter and no currency surprise. The confirmation goes to whichever email addresses you give, and the itemised receipt is suitable for a sponsor or a scholarship claim.
- Put the student’s name and mobile on the booking. The name goes on the board and the chauffeur’s details are shared with the passenger before landing, so the student has a direct number the moment their phone connects.
- Multiple students, one car or several. Three friends to the same halls fit an E-Class; a group of six or seven with luggage takes a V-Class; larger cohorts are booked as a fleet on the same flight bank. International offices and agents placing regular bookings can use a MILE5 business account for invoiced bookings.
- Verifiable, not anonymous. MILE5 Limited is company number 09642693 at Companies House, registered at 450 Bath Road, Longford UB7 0EB, and TfL private hire operator licence 009161 can be checked on TfL’s public register. Every chauffeur holds a TfL private hire driver’s licence, which requires an enhanced DBS check.
- Parents travelling too. A parent can ride to the halls, help unpack, and we take them on to their hotel or back to Heathrow afterwards; ask for the second leg when booking and it is priced up front.
Booking on a student’s behalf? Enter their flight and halls address, add your own email for the confirmation, and put the student’s mobile number in the passenger field so the chauffeur can reach them at the carousel.
International Student Airport Transfer FAQs
How much is a taxi from Heathrow to UCL or King’s Cross?
A pre-booked MILE5 chauffeur is from £157 in a Mercedes E-Class to Bloomsbury, Euston or King’s Cross, fixed at booking and inclusive of the meet and greet, flight tracking, 60 minutes’ waiting and airport charges. A metered black cab from the rank is typically £80 to £120 depending on traffic, and an Uber is roughly £40 to £55 off-peak or £80 to £110 when start-of-term arrival banks push the price up.
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car. An E-Class takes up to three students and a V-Class up to seven, with eight cases in the back.
What if my flight is delayed or lands early?
The chauffeur’s pickup time follows the real landing time. Delays cost nothing extra; the 60 minutes of free waiting starts when you land, not when you were scheduled to.
How much luggage can I bring?
An E-Class takes three large cases plus hand luggage, which covers most solo students. If you are bringing bedding, a monitor or a fourth case, book the V-Class, which takes eight cases, and say so in the notes so the right car is allocated.
Can my parents come with me to see my accommodation?
Yes. An E-Class seats three, a V-Class seven, and the price does not change with the passenger count. Add the onward journey to their hotel or back to the airport when you book and it is quoted as a second fixed leg.
Do you pick up at Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City as well?
Yes, with the same meet inside arrivals at all five airports. Gatwick to King’s Cross is from £233, Stansted from £190, Luton from £191 and London City from £92, all in the E-Class.
Is there a student discount?
No. The fixed prices above are the same for everyone and already include the airport charges that apps and cabs add on top.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as your flight is ticketed if you arrive in the main September intake weeks, when student arrivals at Heathrow peak. For January arrivals a week ahead is fine, and the booking form takes same-day bookings when a car is available.
Where does the chauffeur meet me at Heathrow?
Inside the arrivals hall at the customs exit of your terminal, holding a board with your name. You do not go to a car park or call a number; walk out and look for the board.
