Heathrow Terminal 5 (TW6 2GA) is the exclusive home of British Airways and Iberia, spread across three buildings – the main T5A plus the satellite B and C gates, around 20 minutes away by transit train – with security opening from about 4:30am for the first departures. It is Heathrow’s largest terminal, handling more than 30 million passengers a year, and because it belongs to two airlines rather than twenty, it runs to BA’s rules: BA’s check-in cut-offs, BA’s gate deadlines, BA’s peak waves. This Heathrow Terminal 5 guide covers all of it as it stands in August 2026, from the 2-litre liquid rules to what the journey there actually costs.

Terminal 5 is MILE5‘s home ground – the fleet is based two minutes from the airport at Longford, and T5 pickups and drop-offs are the most-driven journeys in 13+ years and 50,000+ transfers. The details in this guide come from doing the route daily, checked this month against BA’s and Heathrow’s own published information.
What’s New at Terminal 5 – 2026
- The 100ml liquid rule is gone at T5: Heathrow completed its £1bn CT scanner rollout in January 2026, and Terminal 5’s lanes now allow containers up to 2 litres in cabin bags, with liquids and laptops staying inside your bag at the scanner. Many destination airports still enforce 100ml for the return leg – check before you pack for the journey home.
- Drop-off is £7 with a 10-minute maximum stay: Heathrow’s forecourt charge rose from £6 to £7 on 1 January 2026, and the same change introduced a 10-minute maximum in all drop-off zones, enforced by ANPR with an £80 penalty (£40 if paid within 14 days) for overstays or non-payment.
- Elizabeth line fares changed on 1 March 2026: TfL removed the cheaper off-peak Heathrow fare – the contactless fare to or through Zone 1 is now a flat £15.50 at all times.
- Heathrow Express advance fares from £10: The walk-up single is £26, but advance singles booked well ahead start at £10, and under-16s travel free in Standard Class – worth knowing before you dismiss the Express on price.
Which Airlines Use Heathrow Terminal 5?
Heathrow Terminal 5 is used by exactly two airlines: British Airways and its IAG partner Iberia. No other carrier operates from T5. Iberia’s check-in desks sit in Zone H of the departures hall, and every Iberia flight at Heathrow lands and departs from Terminal 5, which keeps BA-Iberia connections inside one building.
The catch runs the other way: not every British Airways flight at Heathrow uses Terminal 5. BA also operates a set of flights from Terminal 3 – so a BA ticket is not automatic proof you are flying from T5. Check the terminal on your boarding pass 24 hours before departure, and if it says Terminal 3, the Heathrow Terminal 3 guide covers that building. MILE5 chauffeurs confirm the terminal from your flight number before every pickup, so the car arrives at the right doors either way.
How Early Should You Arrive at Heathrow Terminal 5?
Arrive 3 hours before a long-haul flight from Heathrow Terminal 5 and 2 hours before a European one, and treat those as minimums for morning departures during school holidays. British Airways publishes hard deadlines behind those guidelines: check-in for European flights opens 2 hours before departure (and never before the terminal’s earliest opening at 04:30), bag drop closes 45 minutes before short-haul departures and 60 minutes before long-haul, and you must be at the gate no later than 20 minutes before departure. Online check-in does not soften the bag-drop cut-off – confirm the exact times in your booking.
The August pattern at Terminal 5 is a long morning: BA’s long-haul departures and the European wave overlap from early morning, so the busiest window runs roughly 6am to 10am, with a second build in the late afternoon. Midday in term time, T5 moves fast. MILE5 calculates every pickup backwards from the flight – your address, live traffic, your terminal – so you arrive inside the right window rather than the longest one.
What Time Does Security Open at Heathrow Terminal 5?
Security at Heathrow Terminal 5 opens at around 4:30am – Heathrow’s own guidance – which matches British Airways’ earliest check-in opening of 04:30. There is no benefit to arriving earlier than that for the first departures of the day: the terminal building is open, but you will wait landside until the lanes open. For a 6am flight with hold luggage, arriving for the 4:30 opening is exactly right; hand-luggage-only travellers can cut it finer.
Once the lanes are running, Heathrow Terminal 5 security is one of the better-drilled operations at any UK airport – multiple lanes, CT scanners, and nothing to unpack. The queue length tracks BA’s departure banks: the 6am-10am wave is the day’s pressure point, school-holiday weekends stack it higher, and by mid-afternoon in term time the lanes are usually quick. Keep liquids (up to 2 litres) and laptops in your bag, have your boarding pass ready at the e-gates, and the process itself rarely takes long once you reach the front.
The cheapest way past a 6am security wave is arriving on the right side of it. MILE5 sets your pickup from your flight time and live traffic – early enough for the queue, no earlier.
Navigating Terminal 5 – T5A, T5B, T5C and the Gate Deadline
Heathrow Terminal 5 is three buildings. T5A is the main terminal – check-in, security, the shops and restaurants, and the A gates. T5B and T5C are satellite buildings out on the airfield, reached by the underground transit train or the moving walkway route, and British Airways’ own guidance allows approximately 20 minutes to reach the B and C gates. Combine that with BA’s rule that you must be at the gate 20 minutes before departure and the arithmetic is unforgiving: when a B or C gate appears on the screens, go. Gate information is published shortly before boarding, so check the screens at regular intervals rather than waiting for an announcement – the BA app pushes gate notifications if you want them on your phone.
Arriving at Heathrow Terminal 5, baggage reclaim feeds into the arrivals hall on the ground floor, where MILE5 chauffeurs wait with a name board – inside the building, not in the car park. Onward to Gatwick for a connection, the Heathrow to Gatwick route runs fixed at £182, with every other airport pairing priced the same way. Live arrivals boards and pickup point details for all four terminals are on the Heathrow flight and taxi information page.
Food, Drink and Lounges at Terminal 5
Heathrow Terminal 5 carries the widest retail and dining spread at the airport, most of it airside across two levels – sit-down restaurants, cafes, bars and grab-and-go. The economics are the same as every UK airport: landside is cheaper than airside for the same chains, and now that liquids stay in your bag at security, food and drink bought before the scanner travels through with you. There are free water refill points airside, so an empty bottle is worth its place in your bag.
Terminal 5’s lounges are British Airways’ own: Galleries Club North and South, Galleries First, the First Wing, and the Concorde Room for First customers. Access is by cabin class, oneworld status or BA status rather than pay-per-use – T5 has no walk-in third-party lounge of the kind found at Heathrow’s other terminals, so if a lounge matters to your journey, it needs to come with your ticket. For an overnight before an early T5 departure, the Sofitel connects directly to the terminal by covered walkway, and MILE5 runs Heathrow hotel transfers to and from every major airport and central London hotel.
Summer 2026 at T5 – The Real Cost of Driving Yourself
School holidays and bank holiday weekends are Heathrow’s peak too. In school holidays and over bank holiday weekends the sums that matter are these: drop-off is £7 with a strict 10-minute maximum and an £80 penalty behind it, drive-up parking rates sit far above pre-booked ones, and the M25 on a summer Friday is its own tax. Run the full comparison before assuming the car wins.
| Option | 7-night August picture | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Long Stay parking | Pre-book weeks ahead or pay steep drive-up rates, plus fuel | Bus transfer to the terminal, your own bag-carrying, the car park at midnight on return |
| MILE5 return chauffeur – central London | From £238 (2 x from £119) | Door to door both ways, luggage handled, flight tracked, met inside T5 arrivals on return at any hour |
| MILE5 return chauffeur – Windsor | £178 (2 x £89) | Twenty minutes each way, fixed both directions – often less than a week of peak parking |
For anyone close to the airport, the Windsor row is the one worth staring at: a fixed return chauffeur can undercut a peak-season week of parking before fuel enters the equation. Further out, the chauffeur costs more on paper and buys back the parts of the journey the spreadsheet ignores – the shuttle bus with four cases, and the drive home after a long-haul landing.
Getting to Heathrow Terminal 5 – What Each Option Actually Costs
Train – three tiers, three prices
Heathrow Terminal 5 has its own station under the terminal, served by all three rail options. The Heathrow Express reaches Paddington non-stop in 15 minutes at £26 for a walk-up single – or from £10 as an advance single booked well ahead, with under-16s free in Standard Class. The Elizabeth line costs a flat £15.50 by contactless to or through Zone 1 at all times (the cheaper off-peak Heathrow fare was withdrawn on 1 March 2026) and runs straight across central London – Paddington, Bond Street, Farringdon, Liverpool Street – in 30 to 45 minutes, which often beats the Express door to door. The Piccadilly line is the budget tier at around £5.90 and 50 to 60 minutes. Solo with light luggage, rail wins on price; with a family, cases and a Tube leg at the far end, the maths tightens fast.
Taxis and app cars
App cars to Heathrow Terminal 5 price dynamically – the fare rises exactly when demand does, which is exactly when you are travelling – and drivers who see an airport destination before accepting decline disproportionately often. Black cabs run the meter, which on the M4 in traffic is an open-ended number. Every private vehicle also faces the £7 drop-off charge and its 10-minute limit at the forecourt. For the app-by-app picture, see the Uber vs Bolt airport comparison. The same question from the safety angle is answered in our guide to the safest ways to travel from Heathrow, and the Terminal 4 guide covers the terminal whose pick-up point moved in June 2026.
MILE5 – fixed prices to and from Terminal 5
MILE5’s prices below are fixed at booking whatever the date, hour or traffic – the drop-off charge is absorbed into the fare, the chauffeur tracks your flight, and arrivals pickups are inside Terminal 5 with 60 minutes of free waiting. E-Class for up to three passengers, S-Class for the same in more comfort, V-Class for up to seven.

Parking and Drop-Off at Terminal 5 – 2026 Rules
Heathrow’s drop-off charge at Terminal 5 is £7, paid online by midnight the following day, with a 10-minute maximum stay in the drop-off zones – both introduced together on 1 January 2026 and enforced by ANPR cameras. Overstay or fail to pay and the penalty is £80, halved to £40 if settled within 14 days. The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, which allows a short free stay with a bus link to the terminal.
Parking for a trip, pre-book as far ahead as you can – drive-up rates at Heathrow’s own car parks sit far above the pre-booked prices, and off-site operators undercut both on longer stays. Every MILE5 transfer absorbs the drop-off charge inside the fixed fare, and the 10-minute rule never becomes your problem: the chauffeur handles the forecourt timing.
Special Assistance at Terminal 5
Special assistance at Heathrow Terminal 5 is arranged through British Airways or Iberia, not the airport – book it at least 48 hours before your flight. Assistance points are marked throughout the terminal, and the service covers the full journey from check-in to the aircraft door, including the transit to the B and C gates.
MILE5 vehicles accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids. Contact us when booking your transfer if you have specific requirements – we coordinate timings with the terminal’s assistance team.
Connecting Between Heathrow Terminals
Terminal 5 connects to Heathrow’s other terminals by free inter-terminal rail – the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express both carry passengers between terminals at no charge – plus free landside buses. Allow a comfortable margin for a BA connection that arrives at T5 and departs from Terminal 3 (or the reverse): the transfer itself is quick, but you re-clear security on the other side. For a BA flight actually departing from T3, everything terminal-specific is in the Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 guides linked from the site footer. Students arriving on BA long-haul for the September intake will find the pick-up walked through in our international student arrivals guide.
Nine Terminal 5 Tips Frequent Flyers Use
- Security opens around 4:30am. So does BA check-in. For the first wave of departures there is nothing to gain by arriving at 3:45 – you will stand landside until the lanes open.
- B and C gates are 20 minutes away. BA’s own guidance. Add the be-at-the-gate-20-minutes-before rule and a satellite gate means moving the moment it appears on screen.
- A BA ticket does not guarantee Terminal 5. BA also flies from Terminal 3 at Heathrow. The terminal on your boarding pass is the only answer that counts.
- Leave liquids and laptops in your bag. T5’s CT lanes take containers up to 2 litres and the lanes move fastest for passengers who do not unpack.
- Book the Heathrow Express in advance if Paddington suits you. £10 advance singles against the £26 walk-up fare – and under-16s ride free either way.
- Take the Elizabeth line if your hotel is central. £15.50 flat, straight through Bond Street, Farringdon and Liverpool Street – one train, no Tube change with cases.
- Flying Iberia? Check-in is Zone H. Head straight there rather than reading every zone board in the hall.
- Screenshot your boarding pass the night before. Terminal, gate deadline and seat all survive a dead battery in the drop-off zone.
- Pre-book the transfer and the whole day gets simpler. MILE5 tracks your flight, adjusts to early or late landings, absorbs the drop-off charge and meets you inside T5 arrivals with a name board. Get an instant quote →
Common Terminal 5 Problems (& Solutions)
Problem: “My BA flight is actually at Terminal 3”
Take the free inter-terminal transfer – Elizabeth line or Heathrow Express between terminal stations, or the landside bus – and allow for clearing security again at the other end. Done promptly it is a 20-30 minute recovery. This is the most common wrong-terminal mistake at Heathrow precisely because “BA means T5” is almost always true.
Problem: “The security queue is huge and my flight boards soon”
Find a member of security staff, show your boarding pass, and ask calmly. Genuinely tight connections can be moved forward at staff discretion. Prevention beats the ask: the 6am-10am wave is the risk window, and arriving on BA’s guidance rather than under it keeps you out of this paragraph.
Problem: “My phone died and my boarding pass is on it”
Any staffed BA desk or gate can reprint a boarding pass from your booking reference or passport. Go to the nearest staffed point rather than rejoining the main check-in queue.
Problem: “My app driver cancelled on the way to the airport”
Airport runs get declined and cancelled disproportionately because the driver faces an empty return leg. A pre-booked transfer removes the incentive problem: MILE5 assigns your chauffeur in advance, the job is committed, and the price is fixed whatever the M4 is doing. Regular flyers can put it on account through our corporate chauffeur service. The same account handles event weeks: our WTM London 2026 transfer guide covers the 3 to 5 November show at ExCeL.

People Also Ask
What time does security open at Heathrow Terminal 5?
Security at Heathrow Terminal 5 opens at around 4:30am, matching British Airways’ earliest check-in opening of 04:30. For the first departures of the day there is no benefit to arriving earlier – the terminal building is open, but you will wait landside until the lanes open.
Which airlines fly from Heathrow Terminal 5?
Heathrow Terminal 5 is used exclusively by British Airways and Iberia – no other airlines operate from it. Iberia checks in at Zone H, and every Iberia flight at Heathrow uses T5, which keeps BA-Iberia connections inside one terminal.
Do all British Airways flights leave from Terminal 5?
No. Most British Airways flights at Heathrow use Terminal 5, but BA also operates a set of flights from Terminal 3, and BA flies from London Gatwick and London City as well. The terminal printed on your boarding pass is the definitive answer – check it 24 hours before departure.
How early should I arrive at Heathrow Terminal 5?
Arrive 3 hours before long-haul flights and 2 hours before European flights from Heathrow Terminal 5, treating those as minimums for morning departures in the school holidays. British Airways closes bag drop 45 minutes before short-haul and 60 minutes before long-haul departures, and requires passengers at the gate 20 minutes before departure.
Can I take liquids over 100ml through Terminal 5 security?
Yes. Heathrow Terminal 5’s CT scanner lanes allow containers up to 2 litres in cabin bags, with liquids and laptops staying inside your bag at the scanner, following Heathrow’s January 2026 rollout. Your return airport may still enforce the 100ml rule, so check its rules before packing for the journey home.
How far are the B and C gates at Terminal 5?
British Airways allows approximately 20 minutes to reach Terminal 5’s B and C gates from the main T5A building, via the underground transit train or the moving walkway route. Combined with BA’s rule of being at the gate 20 minutes before departure, a satellite gate means leaving the main terminal as soon as it appears on the screens.
How much is the train from Heathrow Terminal 5 to central London?
From Heathrow Terminal 5, the Heathrow Express to Paddington costs £26 walk-up (advance singles from £10, under-16s free) and takes 15 minutes; the Elizabeth line is a flat £15.50 by contactless and runs through central London in 30 to 45 minutes; the Piccadilly line costs around £5.90 and takes 50 to 60 minutes.
How much is a chauffeur from Heathrow Terminal 5 to central London?
MILE5 chauffeur transfers between Heathrow Terminal 5 and central London start from £119 in a Mercedes E-Class, fixed at booking with no surge pricing. Every transfer includes inside-terminal meet and greet, flight tracking, 60 minutes of complimentary waiting and the drop-off charge absorbed, with S-Class and V-Class options on every route.
