Gatwick to Shangri-La at The Shard Transfer – London Bridge, Door to Door
A Gatwick to Shangri-La at The Shard transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 55 to 90 minutes door to door and from £227 one way, running both directions at any hour. You land, your driver is inside arrivals with your name, and you are taken to the hotel entrance on St Thomas Street, at the foot of The Shard by London Bridge – no platform changes, no taxi queue, no luggage to wheel through a station. The Shangri-La to Gatwick leg works the same way: collected from the door, timed to your flight, out to the terminal in good time.
The hotel occupies the upper floors of The Shard, the Renzo Piano tower that has marked the London Bridge skyline since 2012, with a street-level entrance on St Thomas Street and the sky-lobby check-in high above it. From Gatwick we run the M23 to the M25, then come up the A23 through south London towards Southwark – because the hotel is on the south side of the river, this run often avoids the worst of the central crossings. Reckon on 28 to 30 miles. Off-peak you are at the door in under an hour; through a weekday rush, or with Borough Market in full swing at a weekend, the last stretch is the slow one and the whole trip can reach about 90 minutes. We quote the honest range.
This is one address where the train is a genuinely strong option, and we will not pretend otherwise. London Bridge station sits directly beneath the tower, and both Thameslink and Southern run there from Gatwick without a change, often in well under the hour. If you are travelling light, that is hard to beat. The car earns its place on the things the train cannot smooth over: real luggage hauled up from a platform, a family to keep together, a long-haul landing late at night, or simply wanting to step from the terminal into a waiting car rather than work out the right exit. On the way out, a door pickup beats dragging cases down to the concourse for an early flight.
MILE5 has run London airport transfers for over fifteen years, more than 50,000 of them, all on a TfL private hire licence (No. 009161). The 5-star Google rating comes from passengers who describe the journey as it actually went, which is the kind worth reading.

Every Gatwick to Shangri-La at The Shard transfer includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, live flight tracking, and 60 minutes of complimentary wait once you have landed. London Bridge sits inside both the ULEZ and the Congestion Charge zone, and we absorb both, along with the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay. Door delivery to the St Thomas Street entrance, full luggage handling and child seats on request at an extra charge, around the clock. The E-Class suits one or two travellers, the S-Class is the step up in space and finish, and the V-Class at £338 takes up to seven with the boot for a family’s luggage.
London Bridge, Borough and the River
For all its height, the hotel sits in one of the most walkable corners of London. Step out at street level and Borough Market is two minutes away, its food stalls busiest on a Friday and Saturday; Southwark Cathedral is next to it, and the river is a short stroll north. Follow the Thames east and you reach Tower Bridge, with the Tower of London on the far bank; west takes you along the South Bank towards Tate Modern, the Globe and, eventually, the Southbank Centre. Guy’s Hospital is right alongside The Shard, so we carry a steady run of medical visitors to this address too. The City proper – Bank, the old square mile – is just across London Bridge, which is why this works as a base for both business and sightseeing.
Up in The Shard
What people remember about staying here is the height. The hotel takes the floors above the offices and below the viewing gallery, with rooms looking out across the whole city and a sky-lobby that already feels a long way up. There is a bar near the top with a view to match, restaurants on the high floors, and an indoor pool set among the glass that is among the highest in Europe. The same tower holds the View from The Shard gallery higher still, so even guests who are not staying come to look out. It is a different proposition to London’s older grand hotels – newer, glassier, built around the view – and the guests who choose it tend to want exactly that.
The Direct Train, or the Car?
Because the station is under the building, this is the rare central address where the train is a real contender, so here is the honest version. A direct Thameslink or Southern service from Gatwick to London Bridge, then a short walk to the entrance, is quick and cheap if you are travelling light – we would be daft to tell you otherwise. The chauffeur is for the trips that the train makes harder than it should be: a couple of large cases up from a deep platform, children in tow, a flight that lands near midnight, or simply not wanting to think about exits and lifts after a long day in the air. The Shangri-La to Gatwick direction is where regulars lean to the car – leaving early with luggage, a fixed-price pickup from the door is the calmer start.
What We Know About the London Bridge Run
A few things this route has taught us. Send the flight number rather than a guessed time – we track it, so an early landing or an hour on the apron makes no difference, and the first hour of waiting is free either way. The streets right around The Shard and St Thomas Street are tight and often busy with station and hospital traffic, so the final approach is not always quick; our drivers know where to pull in. Weekends bring the Borough Market crowds, which thicken the whole quarter through the middle of the day. For the Shangri-La to Gatwick leg on an early departure, we will set the pickup with margin – the A23 southbound through Brixton clogs early, and we would rather sit at Gatwick than watch you miss a bag drop.
Meeting You at the Terminal
Flights arrive at either the North Terminal or the South Terminal, and your driver waits inside the arrivals hall by the baggage-reclaim exit with a name board – not out in a pick-up lane you have to find. If you are not sure which building you land in, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide show where we stand and how the inter-terminal shuttle links the two. We follow your inbound on the Gatwick flight information page, where the live arrivals board is there for you to watch too, so a delay or an early landing is already in the plan by the time you reach the hall.
