Gatwick to Lewes Transfer – Fixed-Price County Town Chauffeur
A Gatwick to Lewes transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 45 to 65 minutes door to door and from £187 one way, running in both directions whatever the hour. You come through arrivals to a driver already holding your name, your cases go in, and you are heading for the county town in the Downs while the taxi rank is still a queue. No meter, no surge, one agreed price each way.
Lewes sits just inland of Brighton, where the River Ouse cuts through the South Downs, so the run heads south and keeps clear of the M25. We usually take the A23 down towards Brighton then the A27 east into Lewes, or drop via the A22 and A26 – around 30 miles and 45 to 65 minutes depending on the hour. The A27 around Brighton is the variable stretch, busiest at commuter times, and your driver knows which line is moving. The timing is built around your landing, not a flat figure, and the route flexes if the road is heavy.
For one person travelling light, the train is a fair option and we will say so. Lewes has a good station with direct trains from the airport, and the trip runs roughly 40 to 50 minutes before you have walked from the station up into the steep town. With a second person, real luggage or a child seat, the door-to-door car is the simpler answer, and we tell you that rather than push the bigger fare.
MILE5 has run airport transfers and chauffeur trips for more than fifteen years across over 50,000 journeys, and the same fixed-price, licensed service sits behind every Lewes run, out and back. We are TfL licensed (No. 009161) and hold a 5-star Google rating built on travellers who book us again and again.

Every Gatwick to Lewes transfer includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, live flight tracking, and 60 minutes of free wait time so a slow bag belt costs you nothing. We absorb the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge and ULEZ where it applies, carry the luggage door to door, and fit child seats on request at an extra charge, around the clock – the same on the Lewes to Gatwick leg home. The E-Class suits a couple or a solo traveller, the S-Class lifts the finish for a business arrival or a Glyndebourne evening, and the seven-seat V-Class at £277 takes a whole group with the cases to match.
Where We Drop You in Lewes
Lewes is steep and tightly built, which is the thing to know. The High Street runs along the ridge with the castle above it, and the side streets – the local word is twittens – drop away narrow and cobbled, so we get you as close to the door as the road allows and you walk the last short stretch. The station sits down by the river at the bottom of town; Cliffe, the old quarter across the Ouse, has the antique shops and Harvey’s Brewery; Southover, below the castle, holds Anne of Cleves House and the Priory ruins. Beyond the town, plenty of journeys carry on to Glyndebourne for the opera, to Charleston and the Bloomsbury houses, or out to the Downs villages. Tell us whether it is a High Street hotel, a Cliffe townhouse or a country house out towards Glyndebourne, with the road name, and the driver lands you at the door.
What Brings People to Lewes
Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and one of the most history-dense small towns in the country. The castle is its centrepiece, and it is genuinely unusual: built by William de Warenne soon after the Conquest, it is one of only two castles in England with two mottes – the other is Lincoln – and its 14th-century barbican gate still straddles the path up the hill. In 1264 the town gave its name to the Battle of Lewes, where Simon de Montfort defeated Henry III on the Downs just above the streets and forced through the settlement that historians treat as a milestone on the road to the English Parliament. Down in Southover stands Anne of Cleves House, a Tudor timber-framed hall given to Henry VIII’s fourth wife as part of her annulment settlement, though she never actually lived in it.
The town wears its radical streak with pride. Thomas Paine, who went on to write The Rights of Man, lived at Bull House from 1768 and argued politics with the Headstrong Club upstairs at the White Hart before he ever sailed for America. Harvey’s, the oldest independent brewery in Sussex, still brews by the Ouse in its Victorian tower, and the steep cobbles of Keere Street – which the Prince Regent is said to have driven a coach down for a bet – are some of the most photographed in the county. Lewes is also the home of the most famous Bonfire Night in Britain: every 5 November the bonfire societies parade burning torches and effigies through the town, the streets fill, and anyone arriving for it should expect roads closed and the place packed. Add Glyndebourne’s opera just outside town and the Bloomsbury houses at Charleston and Rodmell nearby, and Lewes punches far above its size.
Chauffeur, Train or Hire Car
Three honest ways to make the run from the airport. Here is the shape of each.
| Option | Journey | Luggage & effort | Cost shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| MILE5 chauffeur | 45-65 min, direct, door to door | Met in the terminal, bags carried, no changes | Fixed price, agreed before you fly |
| Train | ~40-50 min, direct train, then a walk up into town | Carry your own bags, then up the hill from the station | Cheaper solo, dearer once a family adds taxis |
| Hire car | 45-65 min if the A27 runs clear | You drive after a flight, then park on steep streets | Daily rate, fuel, parking, excess – it adds up |
What the Route Has Taught Us
A few notes from driving this one. The A27 around Brighton and Lewes is the pinch point, slow at commuter times, so for a tight outbound flight we leave a margin and pick the moving line. The town itself is steep and narrow, with limited stopping on the High Street, so we set down at the nearest sensible point and you walk in – and for a Cliffe or Southover address the river side is easier than the ridge. Bonfire night, the 5th of November, is the one day to plan hard around: the town closes to traffic and fills completely, so we drop well out and you walk the rest, or we time it for before the parades. Glyndebourne evenings are a regular extension of this run, black tie and a picnic in the boot. And the Lewes to Gatwick return for an early flight wants booking the night before – quiet roads before dawn, but not the place for a last-minute cab.
Meeting You at Gatwick
However the Lewes transfer is booked, your driver tracks the flight and is inside the terminal before you reach the hall. At the North Terminal we wait in arrivals past the baggage doors; at the South Terminal, the same, at the meeting point – never a layby or a phone call across a car park. If you want the layout in advance, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide show where arrivals comes out and where the driver stands, and the Gatwick flight information page lets you check the live arrivals board and follow the inbound flight before you travel. Gatwick runs on North and South Terminals only – no numbered terminals – so the meeting point is simple once you know your airline’s side.

Gatwick to Lewes Transfer FAQ
How much is a Gatwick to Lewes transfer?
The run to Lewes starts from £187 in the Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers, £273 in the S-Class, and £277 in the seven-seat V-Class. The price is fixed, agreed before you travel, the same in both directions, and already covers the meet-and-greet, flight tracking and waiting time.
How long does the journey take, and how far is it?
Around 30 miles and roughly 45 to 65 minutes, heading south on the A23 and A27 towards Brighton rather than up the M25. The A27 around Brighton is the part that varies, so an early run is quicker and your driver allows for it.
Do you cover Lewes to Gatwick as well?
Yes. The Lewes to Gatwick leg is the same fixed price and the same service in reverse – collected from your hotel, a Cliffe townhouse or a country house, with the morning traffic watched and time built in. For early flights we suggest booking the return the night before.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing on your part. We track the flight from take-off, so the driver works to your real landing time, and the 60 minutes of free wait covers a slow passport hall or carousel. A delay does not add anything to the fixed price.
Can you take us on to Glyndebourne, Charleston or the Downs?
We can. Glyndebourne for the opera is a regular extension of this run, and so are Charleston, Monk’s House at Rodmell and the South Downs villages. Tell us the full plan when you book and we will build the stops in – for a Glyndebourne evening, give us the interval timings.
How many passengers and bags can you take?
The E-Class and S-Class carry up to three with cases to match; the V-Class seats up to seven and takes a full group’s luggage, a buggy or a Glyndebourne picnic hamper. If you are unsure which fits, send the numbers and we will tell you straight.
Do you serve the outlying areas – the Ouse valley and Downs villages?
Yes, the whole Lewes area and the surrounding villages, including Ringmer, Glynde, Rodmell, Kingston and Barcombe. Give us the postcode and you get a fixed quote for that exact door, both ways.
Sussex, the Downs and Beyond
Lewes is one of the Sussex inland and Downs routes we drive from Gatwick, and several pair naturally with it. Across the county, the Gatwick to Chichester transfer from £223 reaches the western cathedral city, and the Gatwick to Arundel transfer from £203 covers the castle town on the Arun. Closer in, Haywards Heath from £131 handles the commuter belt on the main line down from the airport.
For the full set of routes beyond the capital, the Gatwick long-distance transfers hub lists every coastal and county run, and the main Gatwick chauffeur service page is where to start if a London hotel or city stop joins the same trip. If you are weighing the chauffeur against collecting a car at the airport, our guide on choosing a chauffeur over a hire car sets out what self-driving after a flight really costs.
