Gatwick to Hastings Transfer – Fixed-Price East Sussex Chauffeur
A Gatwick to Hastings transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 65 to 85 minutes door to door and from £254 one way, running in both directions at any hour. You walk out of arrivals to a driver holding your name, your cases go in the boot, and you are on the road to the old town while the taxi queue is still standing still. No meter, no surge, one agreed price each way.
Hastings sits down in the far south-east corner of Sussex, so this is one of the longer coastal runs and it does not touch much motorway. We head south and east on the A22 and A267, or cut across to pick up the A21 into the town, depending on the day – around 45 miles and 65 to 85 minutes. There is no quick dual-carriageway shortcut to Hastings; the last stretch is country road, which is part of why a chauffeur who knows it beats guessing your own way after a flight. Your driver plans the route and the timing around your landing, and adjusts if the A21 or the lanes are slow.
For one person with a single bag, the train is a fair option and we will say so. There is no fast direct service – you change at Lewes, or route round via Ashford – and the journey runs something over an hour and a half before you are out of Hastings station and down to the seafront. With a second person, real luggage or a child seat, the door-to-door car is the easier call by a clear margin, especially on a run this length. That is the honest version we give every caller.
MILE5 has run airport transfers and chauffeur trips for more than fifteen years across over 50,000 journeys, and the same fixed-price, licensed service sits behind every Hastings run, out and back. We are TfL licensed (No. 009161) and hold a 5-star Google rating earned from travellers who keep booking us.

Every Gatwick to Hastings transfer includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, live flight tracking, and 60 minutes of free wait time so a slow bag belt costs you nothing. We absorb the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge and ULEZ where it applies, carry the luggage door to door, and fit child seats on request at an extra charge, around the clock – the same on the Hastings to Gatwick leg home. The E-Class suits a couple or a solo traveller, the S-Class lifts the finish for a business arrival, and the seven-seat V-Class at £382 takes a whole group with the cases to match.
Where We Drop You in Hastings
Most visitors are aiming for the Old Town, the eastern end below the two cliffs, around George Street, the High Street and Rock-a-Nore by the fishing beach. Those lanes are narrow and some are pedestrian, so we get you as close to the door as the road allows and carry the bags the last few steps. The main seafront runs west from the Old Town along the wide Victorian front, past the town centre with the station behind it, to the pier at White Rock. Keep going and you reach St Leonards-on-Sea, the elegant Regency-and-Victorian sister town with Marina Beach and the Marine Court block on the front. Up on the hills, Hastings climbs steeply, so an address up West Hill or out towards the Country Park needs the exact road. Tell us whether it is an Old Town guesthouse, a seafront hotel or a house in St Leonards, and the driver lands you there rather than near there.
What Brings People to Hastings
Hastings gave its name to the most famous date in English history, though the battle itself was fought about six miles inland at Senlac Hill, near the town now simply called Battle. William the Conqueror landed along this coast at Pevensey in 1066, won the day, and ordered a castle built on the West Hill – the first Norman castle in England. Its ruins still stand above the town, with a chapel arch, dungeons and a long view over the Channel, and you reach them by the funicular up the cliff. That is one of two cliff railways here; the East Hill Lift, opened in 1902, is the steepest funicular in the country and carries you up to the wild clifftops of Hastings Country Park.
The Old Town is the real character of the place. Down on the Stade – Saxon for landing place – sits Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet, hauled up the shingle because Hastings has never had a harbour, and beside the boats stand the net huts: tall, black, tar-boarded sheds built upward on tiny plots to store the nets, now Grade II* listed and unique to the town. The black-tiled Hastings Contemporary gallery sits right among them on the fishing beach. The pier is the modern landmark and a genuine comeback story: the Victorian structure of 1872 was all but destroyed by fire in 2010, then rebuilt as a clean open deck and reopened in 2016, winning the Stirling Prize, Britain’s top architecture award, the following year. Add the smugglers’ caves under the West Hill, a tangle of medieval twittens and independent shops, and the fact that John Logie Baird worked on early television here in the 1920s, and Hastings rewards more than a quick look.
Chauffeur, Train or Hire Car
Three honest ways to make this run from the airport. Here is the shape of each.
| Option | Journey | Luggage & effort | Cost shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| MILE5 chauffeur | 65-85 min, direct, door to door | Met in the terminal, bags carried, no changes | Fixed price, agreed before you fly |
| Train | ~90 min plus, change at Lewes or via Ashford | Carry your own bags, then a taxi up to the Old Town | Cheaper solo, dearer once a family adds taxis |
| Hire car | 65-85 min over unfamiliar country roads | You drive after a flight, then park on steep hills | Daily rate, fuel, parking, excess – it adds up |
What the Route Has Taught Us
A few things worth knowing on this one. There is no fast road all the way to Hastings, so for a tight outbound flight we build in a proper margin rather than trust the lanes to run clear – it is the kind of route where ten minutes of farm traffic can matter. Old Town parking is genuinely hard, so for a guesthouse off George Street or the High Street we set down at the nearest vehicle point and walk you in; the Rock-a-Nore end is easier for the fishing beach and the gallery. Bonfire night and the May Jack-in-the-Green close parts of the Old Town entirely, so if you are arriving for an event tell us and we plan the drop around the road closures. And the Hastings to Gatwick return for an early flight wants booking the night before – the roads are quiet before dawn, but this is the wrong corner of Sussex to be hunting a 5am cab. If you want to take in Battle Abbey, Rye or Bodiam on the way, we can build the stops in.
Meeting You at Gatwick
However the Hastings transfer is booked, your driver tracks the flight and is inside the terminal before you reach the hall. At the North Terminal we wait in arrivals past the baggage doors; at the South Terminal, the same, at the meeting point – never a layby or a phone call across a car park. If you want the layout in advance, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide show where arrivals comes out and where the driver stands, and the Gatwick flight information page lets you check the live arrivals board and follow the inbound flight before you travel. Gatwick runs on North and South Terminals only – no numbered terminals – so the meeting point is simple once you know your airline’s side.

Gatwick to Hastings Transfer FAQ
How much is a Gatwick to Hastings transfer?
The run to Hastings starts from £254 in the Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers, £364 in the S-Class, and £382 in the seven-seat V-Class. The price is fixed, agreed before you travel, the same in both directions, and already covers the meet-and-greet, flight tracking and waiting time.
How long does the journey take, and how far is it?
Around 45 miles and roughly 65 to 85 minutes, heading south and east on the A22, A267 and A21 rather than up the M25. There is no fast dual carriageway the whole way, so the time leans on traffic and the country lanes, and your driver builds that in.
Do you cover Hastings to Gatwick as well?
Yes. The Hastings to Gatwick leg is the same fixed price and the same service in reverse – collected from your hotel, Old Town guesthouse or a St Leonards address, with the morning traffic watched and time built in. For early flights we suggest booking the return the night before.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing on your part. We track the flight from take-off, so the driver works to your real landing time, and the 60 minutes of free wait covers a slow passport hall or carousel. A delay does not add anything to the fixed price.
Can you stop at Battle, Rye or Bodiam on the way?
We can. This corner of Sussex is full of it – Battle Abbey on the 1066 battlefield, the cobbled hill town of Rye, the moated Bodiam Castle – and plenty of guests add a stop to the airport run. Tell us when you book and we will build it in.
How many passengers and bags can you take?
The E-Class and S-Class carry up to three with cases to match; the V-Class seats up to seven and takes a full group’s luggage, a buggy or golf clubs. If you are unsure which fits, send the numbers and we will tell you straight.
Do you serve St Leonards and the outlying areas?
Yes, the whole Hastings and St Leonards area and the surrounding places, including Ore, Hollington, Bexhill, Battle and the villages out towards Rye. Give us the postcode and you get a fixed quote for that exact door, both ways.
Sussex Coast and Beyond
Hastings is the eastern end of the Sussex coast routes we drive from Gatwick. Heading back west along the shore, Gatwick to Eastbourne from £222 brings you to Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, and beyond it our Gatwick to Brighton from £178 and Gatwick to Hove from £177 cover the city. Further west still, the Gatwick to Worthing transfer from £196 and the Bognor Regis run from £219 reach the West Sussex resorts.
For the full set of routes beyond the capital, the Gatwick long-distance transfers hub lists every coastal and county run, and the main Gatwick airport chauffeur page is where to start if a London hotel or city stop joins the same trip. If you are weighing the chauffeur against collecting a car at the airport for a run this length, our guide on choosing a chauffeur over a hire car sets out what self-driving after a flight really costs.
