Gatwick to Epsom Transfer – Straight to the Downs and the Derby Town

A Gatwick to Epsom transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 35 to 50 minutes door to door and from £150 one way, running in both directions 24/7. Your driver meets you inside the terminal and takes you straight to your address – a home in town, a hotel, or the racecourse on a big day – with no rail change and no taxi rank to hunt for. The Epsom to Gatwick leg works the same way for the trip back, timed around your flight.

Epsom sits just inside the M25 in north Surrey, in the borough of Epsom and Ewell, about 20 to 22 miles from Gatwick. The drive runs north on the M23, picks up the M25 to junction 8 near Reigate, then climbs the A217 over the Downs into town – roughly 35 minutes when the roads are clear, closer to 50 if the M25 is busy. It is one of the shorter beyond-London runs, and a steady one for us, with a mix of residents, business travellers and racegoers.

For everyday trips the appeal is simply not having to think about the journey: a known fixed fare, a car to yourself, and a door-to-door run rather than a connection. With the V-Class seating up to seven, it also suits a group heading to the same address on one fare, which is common on a race weekend.

MILE5 is a TfL licensed private hire operator (Licence No. 009161) with fifteen years and more than 50,000 airport transfers behind it, and a five-star Google rating you can read on our reviews page. The timings here come from drivers who run this stretch of Surrey regularly.

Every Gatwick to Epsom transfer includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, live flight tracking, and 60 minutes of complimentary wait time, so a late landing never costs you the car. The £10 Gatwick drop-off charge is absorbed, ULEZ is covered where it applies, and there is full luggage handling, child seats on request at an extra charge, and direct delivery to your door. We run 24/7, and the Epsom to Gatwick direction is the same fixed price, so a return stays symmetrical with no homeward premium.

Where We Take You in Epsom

Most drops are in and around the town centre, marked by the Victorian clock tower at the head of the High Street, or in the residential streets and the villages of Ewell, Stoneleigh and Tattenham Corner that make up the wider borough. For race days we head up to Epsom Downs Racecourse itself; for a day out there is Nonsuch Park on the Ewell side, the open downland of Epsom Common, and Horton Country Park to the west.

On a normal day the run is simple. On Derby weekend it is worth planning, because the roads onto the Downs fill up – we will talk you through the best approach and drop you as close to your enclosure or the Hill as the day’s traffic management allows. Give us the postcode or the enclosure name and we route to it.

What Epsom Is Known For

Epsom has two claims to fame, and both are older than they look. The first is in your bathroom cabinet: Epsom salts, the magnesium sulphate first drawn from the town’s mineral springs around 1618. Those waters turned Epsom into one of England’s earliest spa towns – Samuel Pepys came out to take them in 1663 – and although the spa faded once Bath took the fashion, the name stuck to the salt for good.

The second is the racing, and it is world-famous. Epsom Downs Racecourse is the home of the Derby, first run in 1780 and still regarded as the greatest flat race in the world, the “Blue Riband” of the turf. Its older sister race, the Oaks for fillies, dates from 1779. Together they make up the Derby Festival, held over the first weekend of June – the Oaks on the Friday and the Derby on the Saturday. The course itself is unlike any other: a left-handed mile-and-a-half loop that climbs, swings round Tattenham Corner and plunges downhill to a cambered finish, which is why it tests a horse’s balance as much as its speed.

What makes Derby Day special is that it has always belonged to everyone. The Hill, the open common at the centre of the course, is free to all – an Act of Parliament guarantees public access to the Downs every day of the year – and at its mid-century peak the crowd was said to top a million. It is also a place of history: it was here, at the 1913 Derby, that the suffragette Emily Davison stepped in front of the King’s horse and was fatally injured. Beyond the racecourse, the open Downs are a training ground for racehorses and a fine place to walk, with Nonsuch Park nearby preserving the grounds of Henry VIII’s long-vanished palace.

Epsom Transport Options Compared

For an ordinary day the choice is simple, but on a race day the differences are stark, so it is worth setting them side by side.

OptionJourneyThe trade-off
MILE5 chauffeurDoor to door in one car, from £150, around 35-50 minPremium price, but fixed – and dropped close on race day
Drive or hire carM25 and A217, plus parkingHeavy congestion onto the Downs on Derby weekend

If your alternative is to drive and park, the case for a chauffeur is strongest on race weekend – our guide on choosing a chauffeur over a rental sets out why, from the parking scramble to the drive home after a long day.

What the Epsom Run Has Taught Us

A few notes from doing this route over the years. On the Derby Festival weekend the bottleneck is the last mile onto the Downs, not the motorway, so leave a generous margin and we will aim to reach your enclosure before the approach roads tighten. For the return after racing, build in time – crowds and traffic clear slowly off the Hill, and a pickup point a short walk from the worst of it gets you moving sooner. On an ordinary day none of this applies; it is a clean 40-minute run each way. And for the Epsom to Gatwick leg on an early flight, a booked car is steadier than a first train with a change.

Gatwick Terminal Pickups

We meet every arrival inside the terminal. For a Gatwick to Epsom transfer your driver tracks the inbound flight, parks up, and waits in the arrivals hall at North Terminal or South Terminal with a name board – we work only the two Gatwick terminals, never anything labelled T2 to T5, which belong to other airports. If you are unsure which terminal your airline uses, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide set out the arrivals halls and meeting points. You can also confirm your inbound status on the Gatwick flight information page, which lets you check the live arrivals board and track your flight before you travel. For the Epsom to Gatwick direction we simply reverse the process, timed to reach your departure terminal in good time.

Gatwick to Epsom FAQs

How much is a Gatwick to Epsom transfer?

A Gatwick to Epsom transfer starts from £150 in the E-Class (up to 3 passengers), £215 in the S-Class, and £216 in the seven-seat V-Class. Prices are fixed and all-inclusive; the final quote depends on your exact postcode and any extra stops.

How long does the journey from Gatwick to Epsom take?

Around 35 to 50 minutes, depending on the M25. It is roughly 20 miles, run via the M23, M25 and the A217 over the Downs into town. Allow extra on the Derby Festival weekend, when the approach to the Downs gets busy.

Can you take me back from Epsom to Gatwick?

Yes. The Epsom to Gatwick leg is the same fixed price as the outbound run. For an early flight a pre-booked car is steadier than a first train with a change, and after a race day we will set a pickup clear of the worst traffic.

What happens if my flight into Gatwick is delayed?

We track your flight from departure, so the driver adjusts to the real landing time at no extra charge. Every transfer includes 60 minutes of complimentary wait time after you land, with meet-and-greet inside the terminal.

Can you take me to Epsom Downs for the Derby?

Yes, the racecourse is one of our regular drops. On Derby Festival weekend we plan the approach around the day’s road closures and drop you as close to your enclosure or the Hill as the traffic management allows. Tell us the enclosure when you book.

How many passengers and bags can you carry?

The E-Class and S-Class take up to three passengers, and the V-Class seats up to seven – well suited to a family or a group sharing one fare to a race day. All vehicles handle full luggage, and child seats are available on request at an extra charge.

Do you only run on race days, or any day?

Any day. The racing is the headline, but most of our Epsom work is everyday airport travel for residents and business visitors, year-round and at any hour.

Planning the Wider Trip

Epsom sits among the Surrey towns we cover, and the neighbouring towns make easy add-ons. We run fixed-price Gatwick chauffeurs to nearby Leatherhead just down the road, west to Guildford and Woking, and on to Godalming and Farnham towards the Hampshire border – each with the same meet-and-greet and fixed fares.

This route is part of MILE5’s wider network from Gatwick. You can see the full spread of beyond-London destinations on our Gatwick long-distance transfers hub, or browse every service – airport, hotel and city – from the main Gatwick chauffeur service page.
