Gatwick to Eastbourne Transfer – Fixed-Price Sussex Coast Chauffeur

A Gatwick to Eastbourne transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 55 to 75 minutes door to door and from £222 one way, running in both directions around the clock. You land, your driver is waiting inside the terminal with your name on a board, and you reach the Sussex coast without a single change of train or a taxi queue. No meter. No surge. Just one car, one price, both ways.

The drive runs south from the airport, not north towards London, so you skip the M25 altogether. From the North or South Terminal it is the A22 down through East Grinstead, Forest Row and Uckfield, then on past Hailsham to the seafront – roughly 38 miles and 55 to 75 minutes depending on the hour. The A22 threads a handful of Sussex villages rather than holding to motorway the whole way, so a Friday teatime can add ten or fifteen minutes, while an early-morning run is usually quicker. Your driver already knows where the road tends to slow and builds the pickup around your real landing time rather than a guess.

The train is a fair option for a light, solo trip, and we will say so plainly. There is a direct Southern service from Gatwick, usually twice an hour, but you still have the walk to the Gatwick platform at one end and a taxi from Eastbourne station at the other. With two suitcases, a child seat or a 6am flight home, the chauffeur wins on effort rather than on the raw clock. That is the honest comparison we give every caller, not a sales line.

MILE5 has run airport transfers and chauffeur trips for more than fifteen years across over 50,000 journeys, and the same fixed-price, fully licensed service sits behind every car we drive, whether it is the run out to the coast or the Eastbourne to Gatwick leg home. We are TfL licensed (No. 009161) and carry a 5-star Google rating built on travellers who book us a second and a third time.

Every Gatwick to Eastbourne transfer includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, live flight tracking, and 60 minutes of complimentary wait time so a slow bag belt costs you nothing. We absorb the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge and ULEZ where it applies, carry your luggage to the car and to the door, and fit child seats on request at an extra charge. Direct, door to door, 24 hours a day. The E-Class suits a couple or a solo traveller, the S-Class is the step up in finish for a business arrival, and the V-Class at £331 takes up to seven with room for golf clubs or a full set of holiday cases.

Where We Drop You in Eastbourne

Most arrivals head for the seafront – the long Victorian run of Grand Parade and Royal Parade, where the big bay-window hotels look straight out at the pier. We can pull in close to your hotel entrance; the parade is partly one-way, so the driver may loop a block to reach the right side, which is normal and built into the time. West of the centre, past the Wish Tower, the streets climb into Meads, the genteel village quarter under Beachy Head with narrow lanes and a slower feel – tell us the road name and we will work out the nearest sensible stop. The Devonshire Quarter sits just inland, home to the Towner gallery, the Congress Theatre and the Devonshire Park tennis courts. At the eastern end, Sovereign Harbour is a modern marina with its own restaurants and waterside apartments, a fifteen-minute hop from the old town.

What Brings People to Eastbourne

The pier is the picture everyone knows: a Grade II* Victorian pleasure pier opened in 1870, designed by the great pier engineer Eugenius Birch, its white domes sitting out over the shingle. A bad fire in 2014 gutted the old domed dancehall, but the pier was repaired and reopened, and you can still walk its full length for nothing. Behind it runs one of the best-preserved Victorian seafronts in England, complete with the famous Carpet Gardens and a 1930s bandstand that still hosts summer concerts. Eastbourne markets itself as the Sunshine Coast, and it has a real claim to being one of the sunniest spots in the country.

The headline, though, is what sits at the western edge. Beachy Head is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, the dramatic full stop where the South Downs meet the Channel, with the red-and-white Beachy Head lighthouse at its foot and Belle Tout standing on the clifftop. Walk on and you reach the Seven Sisters, the run of white cliffs in the Seven Sisters Country Park – one of the most filmed stretches of coast in the UK. Back in town, the Towner gallery is a serious draw: Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2020, wrapped in Lothar Götz’s bold geometric mural, and host of the 2023 Turner Prize, won that year by Jesse Darling. For one week each June, Devonshire Park stages the international grass-court tennis that warms the top players up for Wimbledon, and the town fills accordingly. Add the Napoleonic Redoubt Fortress, the Wish Tower Martello, and the huge August airshow over the bay, and Eastbourne carries a proper calendar rather than a single attraction.

Chauffeur, Train or Hire Car

There are really three ways to make the run down from the airport. Here is the honest comparison.

TrainA little over an hour, direct Southern trainSelf-carry up and down platforms, then a taxi at the far endCheapest option, especially for a solo traveller

What the Route Has Taught Us

I have driven this one in every season, and a few things are worth knowing before you book. The August airshow weekend shuts the seafront road and packs the whole town – if you are arriving then, we plan a drop a street back from the parade and you walk the last bit, which is faster than crawling in the traffic. The June tennis week does the same to the Devonshire Park streets, so allow a margin if your hotel is in that quarter. For Meads, give us the exact address; the lanes up towards Beachy Head are tight and some hotels have an awkward approach. And if you are out here to walk Beachy Head or the Seven Sisters, plenty of guests book us for the airport leg and then a separate half-day to be dropped at the clifftop and collected later. The return is the part people forget: an Eastbourne to Gatwick run for an early flight needs to leave before dawn, the A22 is empty at that hour, and we would rather you booked the night before than gambled on a 5am cab.

Meeting You at Gatwick

However your transfer to Eastbourne is booked, your driver tracks the flight and is inside the terminal before you clear the hall. At the North Terminal we wait in the arrivals area past the baggage doors; at the South Terminal, the same, by the meeting point – never a layby or a phone call to find each other in a car park. If you want the layout in advance, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide walk through where arrivals comes out and where we stand, and the Gatwick flight information page lets you check the live arrivals board and follow a flight in before you travel. Gatwick uses North and South Terminals only – there are no numbered terminals here – so the meeting point is simple once you know which one your airline uses.

Gatwick to Eastbourne Transfer FAQ

How much is a Gatwick to Eastbourne transfer?

The run to Eastbourne starts from £222 in the Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers, £321 in the S-Class, and £331 in the seven-seat V-Class. The price is fixed and agreed before you travel, the same in both directions, and it already covers the meet-and-greet, flight tracking and waiting time.

How long does the journey take, and how far is it?

It is around 38 miles and roughly 55 to 75 minutes, running south on the A22 through East Grinstead and Uckfield rather than up the M25. Time of day matters more than distance here – off-peak and early mornings are quick, a Friday afternoon less so – and your driver allows for it.

Do you cover Eastbourne to Gatwick as well?

Yes. The Eastbourne to Gatwick leg is the same fixed price and the same service in reverse. We pick up from your home, hotel or Sovereign Harbour apartment, watch the morning traffic, and get you to North or South Terminal with time to spare. For early flights we suggest booking the return the night before.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Nothing changes on your side. We track the flight from the moment it leaves, so the driver adjusts to the real landing time, and the 60 minutes of free wait covers a slow passport hall or carousel. A delay does not cost you extra and you are not charged for our waiting.

Can you drop us at Beachy Head or the Seven Sisters?

We can. Many guests book the airport leg and then a separate clifftop drop and collection at Beachy Head or the Seven Sisters Country Park – tell us when you book and we will build it in. The same goes for the South Downs villages inland.

How many passengers and bags can you take?

The E-Class and S-Class seat up to three with cases to match; the V-Class takes up to seven and swallows a full family’s luggage, golf clubs or a buggy. If you are not sure which fits your group and gear, send the numbers and we will tell you straight.

Is the chauffeur cheaper than the train?

For one person travelling light, the train can work out cheaper, and we will tell you so. For two or more, or anyone with real luggage, a child seat or an awkward arrival time, the door-to-door run is usually the easier choice once you add the platforms and a taxi at the Eastbourne end.

Do you serve the outlying areas – Meads, Sovereign Harbour, Pevensey?

Yes, the whole Eastbourne area and the villages around it, including Meads, Sovereign Harbour, Polegate, Pevensey and Hailsham. Give us the postcode and you get a fixed quote for that exact address, both ways.

Sussex Coast and Beyond

Eastbourne is one of a string of Sussex coast runs we cover from Gatwick, and the prices sit close together. If your plans take in more of the coast, our Gatwick to Brighton transfer from £178 and Gatwick to Hove from £177 handle the bigger seaside city to the west, while the Worthing run from £196 and the Bognor Regis run from £219 reach further along the same shore. Heading the other way towards the Kent border, the Gatwick to Hastings transfer from £254 covers the old town and the cliffs beyond.

For the full picture of where we drive beyond the capital, the Gatwick long-distance transfers hub lists every coastal and county route, and the main Gatwick airport chauffeur page is the place to start if you also need a London hotel or city run on the same trip. If you are weighing the chauffeur against picking up a car at the airport, our guide on choosing a chauffeur over a hire car lays out the real costs of driving yourself after a flight.
