Gatwick to Dover Transfer – Door to the Port, Ferry or Castle
A Gatwick to Dover transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, roughly 80 to 100 minutes door to door and from £290 in an E-Class, running both ways. Catching a cruise, a Channel ferry, or just spending the day under the White Cliffs – MILE5 meets you inside Gatwick arrivals and drives straight to the terminal, and the Dover to Gatwick return runs on the same fixed fare so a late docking never leaves you stranded on the quay.
Dover is about 85 miles from Gatwick – the longest of our common Kent runs. We take the M23 up to the M25, then drop onto the M20 (or the A2 through the Medway towns) and follow the A20 down to the docks, usually 80 to 100 minutes. There’s a fast rail option too: Dover Priory connects to London St Pancras on the high-speed line in around 66 minutes. But to reach it from Gatwick you’d cross London first, and the cruise terminals still sit a short taxi from the station. For a sailing, that’s a lot of moving parts with a fortnight of cases.
MILE5 is TfL licensed (Operator No. 009161), with 15+ years and more than 50,000 airport transfers behind it and a 5-star Google rating. We track your inbound flight, so an early arrival or a delay simply moves the pickup – no missed connection, no extra charge.

The fare covers inside-terminal meet-and-greet at Gatwick North or South arrivals, flight tracking, 60 minutes of free wait, the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge, full luggage handling, and child seats at an extra charge. For a couple, the E-Class or S-Class is plenty; a family or group with cruise luggage will want the seven-seat V-Class, which carries everyone and the cases without a squeeze. Twenty-four hours a day, every day.
Cruise terminals, ferry port and town
Dover is two ports in one. It’s the UK’s busiest international ferry port – P&O Ferries, DFDS and Irish Ferries run the short crossings, roughly 90 minutes to Calais and a touch over two hours to Dunkirk – and it’s also the country’s second-largest cruise port after Southampton. The cruise side uses two dedicated terminals in the Western Docks, with a third berth opened for the busiest days; the season runs from spring into autumn, with ships arriving early and sailing mid-afternoon. We drop at whichever terminal your ship uses, at the ferry check-in, or in the town itself.
The practical detail that trips people up: the castle and the cliffs sit high above the harbour, a proper uphill pull from the terminals. On a cruise port-of-call day the port runs a shuttle, but if you’re arriving fresh off a flight to start your holiday, having the car take you up to Dover Castle or the White Cliffs visitor centre saves the climb. Tell us where you’re headed and the driver plans it around the dock gates.
The key to England
Dover Castle has guarded this stretch of coast since the 1180s, when Henry II raised its great keep, and it’s the largest castle in England – they called it the “key to England” for good reason, with France visible across the water on a clear day. Inside the white chalk beneath it runs a network of secret wartime tunnels, and it was from there, in 1940, that Vice-Admiral Bertram Ramsay directed Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of more than 300,000 men from the beaches of Dunkirk. The tunnels are open to walk today, kitted out as the wartime command centre they were.
Then there are the cliffs. The White Cliffs of Dover need no sales pitch – the National Trust land along Langdon Cliffs gives a clean walk out towards the South Foreland Lighthouse, and St Margaret’s Bay below has been the launch point for Channel swims for over a century. In the town, the Roman Painted House and Dover Museum, home to a 3,500-year-old Bronze Age boat, fill in the centuries the castle skips. It is one of the most layered small towns in the country.
Driving yourself, or being driven
| Option | Door to terminal? | Parking for the cruise | Price certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| MILE5 chauffeur | Yes – dropped at your berth | None needed | Fixed before you travel |
| Self-drive + port parking | Yes, then valet or shuttle | Days or weeks of fees | Fuel + parking + tolls |
| Train + taxi | No – via London, then taxi | N/A | Two fares, plus the rank |
The honest comparison on a long port run like this is usually the car versus driving yourself and leaving it parked. Once you add a week or two of cruise parking, the maths rarely favours the second option – we set out the full picture in our note on why a chauffeur beats hiring or parking a car. The chauffeur also means no one in your party loses a day either side of the cruise to a tiring drive.
What this route has taught us
For a ferry, plan to the check-in cut-off rather than the sailing – Dover wants vehicles in early, and the approach roads back up at peak crossing times. For a cruise, embarkation tends to run from early afternoon, but the queues into the Western Docks form before that, so I’ll always nudge a slightly earlier start. And on the way home, an early Dover to Gatwick departure clears Kent before the M20 fills. If you’re tempted by the high-speed train from Dover Priory, it’s genuinely quick into St Pancras – but for the airport leg specifically, a single car beats crossing London with cases every time.
Gatwick terminal pickups
We meet arriving passengers inside both Gatwick terminals – North and South only, never T2 to T5. If you’re flying in to join a ship, the driver waits in the hall with a board; our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide show exactly where. Before the return run, you can follow your inbound on the live arrivals board through the Gatwick flight information page, which is how we keep the Dover to Gatwick pickup matched to the real landing time.

Gatwick to Dover – FAQs
How much is a Gatwick to Dover transfer?
From £290 in a Mercedes E-Class (up to 3), £416 in an S-Class, and £441 in a V-Class for up to 7. The Dover to Gatwick return is the same fixed price, with no surge and no hidden fees – your final quote depends on exact postcode and vehicle.
Do you go to the cruise terminal or the ferry port?
Both. We drop at Dover’s cruise terminals in the Western Docks, at the P&O, DFDS or Irish Ferries check-in, or anywhere in the town. Tell us which at booking and the driver plans the approach to the right dock gate.
Can you take us up to Dover Castle or the White Cliffs?
Yes. Both sit high above the harbour, so being driven up saves a steep walk. We’re happy to set you down at the castle or the National Trust White Cliffs visitor centre rather than the docks.
What if my inbound flight to Gatwick is delayed?
We track it from departure. A late landing just shifts your pickup, and you keep the 60 minutes of complimentary wait once you’re through – no penalty for a delayed flight.
How long does the drive take?
Around 80 to 100 minutes for the roughly 85-mile run via the M23, M25 and M20 (or A2). We allow for ferry check-in cut-offs and cruise embarkation queues into the Western Docks.
Is the high-speed train not quicker?
Dover Priory to St Pancras is fast, but reaching it from Gatwick means crossing London first, and the terminals are still a taxi from the station. For the airport leg with luggage, a single door-to-door car is simpler and the price is fixed up front.
Other ports and coastal runs
Dover is one of several port runs we cover from Gatwick. For sailings from the south coast, our Gatwick to Southampton Cruise Terminal chauffeur (from £316) serves all five Southampton terminals, while the Gatwick to Portsmouth transfer (from £287) covers the Historic Dockyard and the international ferry port. Further west you’ll find Gatwick to Southampton (from £306) into the city, plus Gatwick to Poole (from £370) and Gatwick to Bournemouth (from £359) for Dorset.
Closer to Dover along the Kent coast, our Gatwick to Folkestone run (from £277) serves the Channel Tunnel terminal and the Harbour Arm. All of these sit within our long-distance Gatwick transfers, part of the wider Gatwick airport transfers range.
