Gatwick to Chichester Transfer – Fixed-Price Cathedral City Chauffeur
A Gatwick to Chichester transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 60 to 80 minutes door to door and from £223 one way, running in both directions whatever the hour. You step out of arrivals to a driver already holding your name, your cases go straight in, and you are heading for the cathedral city while the taxi rank is still a queue. No meter, no surge, one agreed price each way.
Chichester sits at the western edge of Sussex, down towards the Hampshire border, so the run heads south and west and keeps clear of the M25. We usually take the A24 or A29 down to join the A27, the coast road that runs in past the cathedral – around 45 miles and 60 to 80 minutes depending on the hour. The A27 around Chichester and Arundel is the variable bit; it can flow freely or bunch up at the roundabouts, and your driver knows which approach is moving. The timing is built around your landing, not a flat figure, and the route flexes if the A27 is heavy.
If you are one person travelling light, the train deserves an honest word. It works – Southern runs direct from the airport via Horsham – but it is a stopping service, and the journey runs about an hour to an hour and a half before you have walked from Chichester station to wherever you are staying. With two of you, real luggage or a child seat, the door-to-door car is the simpler answer, and we say so plainly rather than push the bigger fare.
MILE5 has run airport transfers and chauffeur trips for more than fifteen years across over 50,000 journeys, and the same fixed-price, licensed service sits behind every Chichester run, out and back. We are TfL licensed (No. 009161) and hold a 5-star Google rating built on travellers who book us again and again.

Every Gatwick to Chichester transfer includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, live flight tracking, and 60 minutes of free wait time so a slow bag belt costs you nothing. We absorb the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge and ULEZ where it applies, carry the luggage door to door, and fit child seats on request at an extra charge, around the clock – the same on the Chichester to Gatwick leg home. The E-Class suits a couple or a solo traveller, the S-Class lifts the finish for a business arrival or a Goodwood guest, and the seven-seat V-Class at £334 takes a whole group with the cases to match.
Where We Drop You in Chichester
The city is small, flat and walkable, and most drops are around the centre where the four Roman streets – North, South, East and West – meet at the Market Cross. Much of that core is pedestrian, so we set down at the nearest vehicle access and you are rarely more than a couple of minutes from the door. The cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace Gardens sit just off West Street; Pallant House and the Georgian quarter are to the south-east; the Festival Theatre is up in Oaklands Park to the north. Beyond the city, plenty of journeys carry on to the Goodwood estate above the town, to Chichester Marina and the harbour villages, or down to West Wittering and the beaches. Tell us whether it is a city hotel, a harbour mooring or a house out towards the Witterings, with the road name, and the driver lands you at the door.
What Brings People to Chichester
Chichester was a Roman city – Noviomagus – and its plan still shows it: the four main streets run dead straight from the central cross out to the old gates, the way the Romans laid them nearly two thousand years ago, and the ornate octagonal Market Cross of 1501 still marks the middle. The cathedral is the landmark, founded in 1075 and unusual twice over: it carries the only free-standing medieval bell tower of any English cathedral, and its spire is the only one visible from the sea. Inside, the Arundel Tomb – two stone figures from the 1370s lying hand in hand – is the one Philip Larkin wrote about, ending on the line that what survives of us is love. Modern work sits alongside the medieval: a vivid Marc Chagall window, a John Piper tapestry, and the composer Gustav Holst is buried here.
There is more than the cathedral. Just west of the city, Fishbourne Roman Palace is the largest Roman residence found in Britain, with the country’s biggest collection of in-situ mosaics, including the famous cupid riding a dolphin. The Chichester Festival Theatre, opened in 1962 under Laurence Olivier, remains one of the most respected regional stages in the country, and Pallant House Gallery holds an outstanding collection of modern British art in a Georgian townhouse. Around the city, the land opens out: Chichester Harbour, a protected stretch of creeks and sailing water, runs down to the coast, the South Downs rise to the north, and the Goodwood estate above the town brings the motoring and racing crowds. It is a compact city with a lot packed in.
Chauffeur, Train or Hire Car
Three honest ways to make the run from the airport. Here is the shape of each.
| Option | Journey | Luggage & effort | Cost shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| MILE5 chauffeur | 60-80 min, direct, door to door | Met in the terminal, bags carried, no changes | Fixed price, agreed before you fly |
| Train | ~60-90 min, direct or change at Barnham | Carry your own bags, then a walk or taxi at the far end | Cheaper solo, dearer once a family adds taxis |
| Hire car | 60-80 min if the A27 runs clear | You drive after a flight, then find city parking | Daily rate, fuel, parking, excess – it adds up |
What the Route Has Taught Us
A few notes from driving this one. The A27 around Chichester is the pinch point, especially the Bognor and Fishbourne roundabouts, so for a tight outbound flight we leave a margin and pick the approach that is moving. Goodwood is the big swing in demand: the Festival of Speed and the Revival fill every road and hotel for miles, so if you are arriving for an event book early and we plan around the closures and the park-and-ride. The city centre is largely pedestrian, so we drop at the nearest car access and you walk the last stretch through the precinct. If you are heading on to the harbour, the Witterings or Goodwood, we can set the whole run up in one go. And the Chichester to Gatwick return for an early flight is the one to book ahead – quiet roads before dawn, but the wrong end of Sussex for a last-minute cab.
Meeting You at Gatwick
However the Chichester transfer is booked, your driver tracks the flight and is inside the terminal before you reach the hall. At the North Terminal we wait in arrivals past the baggage doors; at the South Terminal, the same, at the meeting point – never a layby or a phone call across a car park. If you want the layout in advance, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide show where arrivals comes out and where the driver stands, and the Gatwick flight information page lets you check the live arrivals board and follow the inbound flight before you travel. Gatwick runs on North and South Terminals only – no numbered terminals – so the meeting point is simple once you know your airline’s side.

Gatwick to Chichester Transfer FAQ
How much is a Gatwick to Chichester transfer?
The run to Chichester starts from £223 in the Mercedes E-Class for up to three passengers, £324 in the S-Class, and £334 in the seven-seat V-Class. The price is fixed, agreed before you travel, the same in both directions, and already covers the meet-and-greet, flight tracking and waiting time.
How long does the journey take, and how far is it?
Around 45 miles and roughly 60 to 80 minutes, heading south and west on the A24 or A29 to the A27 rather than up the M25. The A27 around Chichester is the part that varies, so an early run is quicker and your driver allows for it.
Do you cover Chichester to Gatwick as well?
Yes. The Chichester to Gatwick leg is the same fixed price and the same service in reverse – collected from your hotel, a harbour mooring or a village address, with the morning traffic watched and time built in. For early flights we suggest booking the return the night before.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing on your part. We track the flight from take-off, so the driver works to your real landing time, and the 60 minutes of free wait covers a slow passport hall or carousel. A delay does not add anything to the fixed price.
Can you take us on to Goodwood, the harbour or West Wittering?
We can. Goodwood is a regular extension of this run, and so are Chichester Marina, the harbour villages and the West Wittering beaches. Tell us the full plan when you book and we will build the stops in – for a Goodwood event, the earlier the better.
How many passengers and bags can you take?
The E-Class and S-Class carry up to three with cases to match; the V-Class seats up to seven and takes a full group’s luggage, sailing kit or golf clubs. If you are unsure which fits, send the numbers and we will tell you straight.
Do you serve the outlying areas – Fishbourne, the harbour, the Witterings?
Yes, the whole Chichester area and the surrounding places, including Fishbourne, Bosham, Chichester Marina, Birdham and East and West Wittering. Give us the postcode and you get a fixed quote for that exact door, both ways.
Sussex, the Downs and Beyond
Chichester sits among the West Sussex routes we drive from Gatwick, and several pair naturally with it. The estate above the city has its own page – our Gatwick to Goodwood transfer from £204 is the one to book for the Festival of Speed, the Revival or the races. Inland, the Gatwick to Arundel transfer from £203 reaches the castle town just up the A27, while Lewes from £187 and Haywards Heath from £131 cover the eastern side of the county.
For the full set of routes beyond the capital, the Gatwick long-distance transfers hub lists every coastal and county run, and the main Gatwick airport transfers page is where to start if a London hotel or city stop joins the same trip. If you are weighing the chauffeur against collecting a car at the airport, our guide on choosing a chauffeur over a hire car sets out what self-driving after a flight really costs.
