Gatwick to Cambridge Transfer – Met at Arrivals, Driven Door to Door

A Gatwick to Cambridge transfer is a fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur, around 100 to 130 minutes door to door and from £321 in an E-Class, running in both directions 24/7. We meet you inside the terminal, track your flight, and drive straight to your college, hotel or address in the city – and the same in reverse, collecting you for a Cambridge to Gatwick departure. No meter, no surge, no hauling cases across London to pick up the only sensible train.

Cambridge sits about 90 miles north-east of the airport. The route runs up the M23, anticlockwise round the M25 over the Dartford Crossing, then north on the M11 to junction 11 or 12 for the city. On clear roads it is close to 100 minutes; the two things that stretch it are the M25 and the Dartford Crossing, which is why we give a range rather than a single figure. The honest alternative is the train: Thameslink runs direct from Gatwick to Cambridge through central London, but it is a slow stopping service of around two hours on a commuter train, which is a long way round with luggage. For two or more passengers or anyone arriving with cases for a college, the Cambridge to Gatwick run in one car is the cleaner answer both ways.

MILE5 is a TfL-licensed private hire operator (Licence No. 009161) with 15+ years and more than 50,000 airport transfers behind us, and a 5-star Google rating from the people we have driven. The car you book is the car that turns up, at the fixed price you were quoted.

Every transfer to Cambridge includes an inside-terminal meet-and-greet at North or South Terminal arrivals, with your driver waiting in the hall holding a name board. We track your flight, so a delay or an early landing simply moves the pickup – the fare does not change. You also get 60 minutes of complimentary wait time, the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge absorbed, ULEZ and congestion costs covered where they apply, full help with the luggage, child seats on request at an extra charge, direct door-to-door delivery, and a service that runs 24/7/365.

Where We Drive in Cambridge

Cambridge guards its centre closely. Much of the old core around King’s Parade, Trinity Street and the market is pedestrian or permit-only, and the city is famously built around bikes rather than cars, so the nearest legal drop for a central college is often a short walk away. We know the workable stops for King’s, Trinity, St John’s and the rest, the porters’ lodges, and the hotels like the University Arms on Parker’s Piece or the Gonville. Tell us the college or street when you book and we will set you down as close as the rules allow.

We also cover the wider city, which has grown well beyond the colleges. That means the Biomedical Campus and Addenbrooke’s Hospital to the south, the Science Park and the tech firms of the Silicon Fen cluster to the north, the railway-side development at the new Cambridge North, and the surrounding villages. If a trip mixes a college drop with a meeting out at one of the parks, give us the postcodes and the fixed price holds to each.

What Brings People to Cambridge

Cambridge began with a quarrel. In 1209 a group of scholars left Oxford after a violent dispute with the townspeople and settled here, founding what became the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world. The colleges came later – Peterhouse, the first, in 1284 – and there are 31 of them now, self-governing communities of courts, chapels and halls strung along the River Cam. The stretch where several of them back onto the water, lawns running down to the willows, is called the Backs, and a punt along it is the classic way to see the city from below.

The single sight everyone comes for is King’s College Chapel, begun by Henry VI in 1446, a Perpendicular Gothic masterpiece whose ceiling is the largest fan vault in the world; its choir sings the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols broadcast worldwide each Christmas Eve. Close by are Trinity, the largest college, with its vast Great Court and the Wren Library that holds a first edition of Newton’s Principia, and the two famous bridges – the Bridge of Sighs at St John’s, and the wooden Mathematical Bridge at Queens’, which legend wrongly credits to Newton though it went up in 1749, decades after his death. Add the free Fitzwilliam Museum, the Norman Round Church, the time-eating Corpus Clock and the University Botanic Garden, and the centre rewards a slow day on foot.

It is also one of the most concentrated centres of science anywhere, which feeds a steady stream of our work. Newton, Darwin and Stephen Hawking all worked here; the structure of DNA was figured out at the Cavendish Laboratory and announced in 1953 in the Eagle pub on Bene’t Street; and the modern Silicon Fen cluster, with the largest commercial research park in Europe, keeps the city busy with conferences and visiting researchers. The university’s own calendar drives the rest: term beginnings and ends, graduations and open days send families and international students between the airport and the colleges, and for a first arrival with two heavy cases the meet-and-greet and the direct drop are worth a great deal. The odd date closes streets – graduation week, the May Balls in June – so we plan the approach with a little room on those.

If you are torn between the chauffeur and driving yourself, our note on why a chauffeur often beats renting a car is worth a look – in a city where the centre is closed to cars and parking is scarce, a hire car spends most of its time as a problem.

What the Cambridge Run Has Taught Us

A few things from running this one. The Dartford Crossing is the wildcard – it can be clear or it can cost you twenty minutes, so for a fixed appointment or a flight we build that in rather than promise the best case. In the centre we will be honest about the drop; for a college off King’s Parade that can mean walking the last couple of hundred yards, which is simply how Cambridge works. For an early flight, a Cambridge to Gatwick car booked the night before lets us leave before the M11 and the Dartford queues build, and that margin is the whole point of fixing it in advance. And at the start or end of term, when a room has to be cleared, the V-Class is the one that takes the bikes, boxes and cases in a single trip.

Pickups at Gatwick North and South Terminal

We collect from both Gatwick terminals. Your driver meets you inside arrivals – at the North Terminal or South Terminal hall, depending on your airline – holding a name board, so there is no kerbside scramble. If you are not sure which terminal you land at, our North Terminal guide and South Terminal guide set out the arrivals layout and where the meeting point sits. Because we flight-track every job, you can also follow your inbound on the Gatwick flight information page and watch the live arrivals board the way we do – if the plane lands early or late, your driver adjusts and the fixed fare stands.

Gatwick to Cambridge Transfer FAQs

How much is a Gatwick to Cambridge transfer?

A Gatwick to Cambridge transfer starts from £321 in a Mercedes E-Class (up to 3 passengers), £463 in the premium S-Class, and £497 in the V-Class for up to 7. The price is fixed and the same in both directions, confirmed when you book – no meter and no surge.

How long does the transfer take?

Around 100 to 130 minutes for the roughly 90 miles between the airport and Cambridge. It is mostly motorway (M23, M25, M11), so the variables are the M25 and the Dartford Crossing rather than the run up the M11.

Where exactly can you drop me in Cambridge?

As close to your college, hotel or address as the city allows. The central core is largely pedestrian and permit-only, so for some colleges the legal stop is a short walk from the gate. Tell us the destination when you book and we will route to the nearest sensible drop and explain it in advance.

Do you also do Cambridge to Gatwick?

Yes. The Cambridge to Gatwick direction is the same fixed price, and for a morning flight it is the simple choice – we collect from your door before the M11 and Dartford queues build, instead of you crossing London by train at that hour.

Is this a good option for students?

It is one of the most common reasons people book it. For international students and families arriving with luggage, the inside-terminal meet and the direct college drop take the pressure off a long journey, and the V-Class copes with a full term’s belongings.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Nothing changes for you. We track your flight from the moment you book, so if you land late or early the driver adjusts and the fixed fare stays the same. You also get 60 minutes of complimentary wait time after landing.

How many people and bags fit?

The E-Class and S-Class seat up to 3 with luggage; the V-Class takes up to 7 passengers and is the one to choose for a family, a group or a student move with several cases.

Cambridge and the Rest of Our Network

Cambridge is one of our heritage and university city runs, and it sits within the wider Gatwick long-distance transfer service that reaches the towns and destinations beyond London. It is also part of everything we do from the airport, set out on the main luxury Gatwick airport transfer hub. Students booking their first journey may also find our guide to the airport transfer service for international students a useful read for what to expect on arrival.

The sister cities in this group pair naturally with a Cambridge visit. Its old rival is our Gatwick to Oxford transfer from £292; the Georgian spa city is the Gatwick to Bath transfer from £403; and the cathedral cities run through the Gatwick to Winchester transfer from £284 and the Gatwick to Salisbury transfer from £324. For the West Country there is the Gatwick to Bristol transfer from £410.

MILE5 covers far more than Gatwick, with chauffeur and airport transfer service across London and beyond. The reviews behind our 5-star Google rating are gathered on our client testimonials page if you want to read what other travellers have said before you book.
