Christmas Airport Transfer London 2026: Heathrow on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Prices

Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and on Christmas Day London’s Tube, buses, Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express do not run at all. The airports stay open. A pre-booked MILE5 chauffeur runs every day of the year at the same fixed price: Heathrow to central London from £119, Heathrow to Gatwick from £182, Gatwick to Mayfair from £216, met inside arrivals with a name board, flight tracked, with 60 minutes of free waiting and no Christmas surcharge.

MILE5 Limited is a TfL-licensed private hire operator (licence 009161) providing fixed-price Mercedes chauffeur airport transfers across London, with 13+ years and 50,000+ transfers completed. The office is two minutes from Heathrow on Bath Road. This guide sets out what runs and what does not from Christmas Eve to the 28 December bank holiday, what a car costs against a black cab or an app, and how to book a Christmas airport transfer at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or London City.

Updated September 2026 for Christmas 2026. Transport arrangements follow the pattern operators ran over Christmas 2025; TfL and the train companies confirm December timetables in November, and this page is updated when they do. MILE5 prices are the live rate card on 3 September 2026.

How Do You Get to Heathrow on Christmas Day 2026?

By road, or not at all. On Christmas Day there is no Tube, no Elizabeth line, no bus, no DLR and no National Rail anywhere in London, and the Heathrow Express, Gatwick Express and Stansted Express all stop for the day. Heathrow’s own free trains between the terminals kept running last year, which helps if you are changing planes, but nothing leaves the airport on rails. Flights do operate on 25 December: fewer than a normal Friday, but every terminal has departures and arrivals.

That leaves four ways to reach or leave Heathrow on Christmas Day. A pre-booked chauffeur is the fixed-price option, and the only one where the car is guaranteed before the day. A black cab from the rank works if there is one on it; TfL adds a £4 Christmas extra to the meter from 20:00 on Christmas Eve to 06:00 on 27 December, and the fare to central London is typically £80 to £120 on an ordinary day. An Uber or Bolt depends on how many drivers choose to work, and on Christmas Day the answer is few, so waits are long and the price is whatever demand pricing sets. A lift from a relative is the fourth, and the M4 and M25 are the quietest they will be all year on the morning itself.

Roads are the one thing that improves. Christmas Day traffic is light, the Congestion Charge is not charged from Christmas Day to the New Year’s Day bank holiday inclusive, and a Heathrow to central London run that allows 45 to 60 minutes on a weekday takes 35 to 45. The pressure moves to Christmas Eve afternoon, when everyone is trying to arrive before the shutdown, and to the 27 and 28 December, when the sales traffic meets the engineering works.

What Runs at Each London Airport Over Christmas 2026?

The dates for 2026: Christmas Eve is Thursday 24 December, Christmas Day Friday 25, Boxing Day Saturday 26, and because Boxing Day falls on a Saturday the substitute bank holiday is Monday 28 December. This is what ran, and did not, over the same days last year; 2026 timetables are published in November.

Two things to check as December approaches: the Elizabeth line’s Boxing Day plan, which changes year to year, and the engineering works between 27 December and New Year, which routinely close parts of the Great Western main line into Paddington and the Brighton main line into Victoria. Times are typical outside the weekday peaks; on Christmas Day itself expect the lower end. The same price applies in either direction. The full list is on our Heathrow price list; hotel drops are on the Heathrow hotel transfers page, and every Gatwick route is on the Gatwick transfers hub.

Against the alternatives: a metered black cab from Heathrow to central London is typically £80 to £120 plus the £4 festive extra, if the rank has a cab; an app ride that quotes £40 to £55 on a quiet weekday afternoon is commonly £80 to £110 or more when demand pricing is on, and it will be on across Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and the days after. The Heathrow chauffeur versus Uber comparison covers the difference in detail, including where each one meets you.

Booking a Christmas Airport Transfer at Heathrow: How It Works

  1. Book on the form with your flight number. Enter the flight, terminal, destination address and passenger count on the booking page. The fixed price is confirmed on screen and by email. We take bookings up to eight hours before pickup, and for 23 to 27 December we recommend booking by the end of November; those days fill first.
  2. Your flight is tracked. The chauffeur’s start time follows the actual landing time, so a fog delay or an early tailwind changes nothing for you. Sixty minutes of waiting after landing is included.
  3. Meet inside arrivals. At every Heathrow terminal the chauffeur waits inside the arrivals hall, at the exit from customs, holding a board with your name. No car park, no phone call. The Terminal 5 guide, Terminal 3 guide and Terminal 2 guide show each arrivals hall and where the car is parked.
  4. Travelling with family. Child and booster seats are free; give the ages when booking. The V-Class takes seven passengers and eight cases, which is the car for grandparents plus presents.
  5. Plans change. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the pickup, and a date change is an email.

Christmas Eve: The Busiest Arrivals Afternoon of the Year

Everyone flying in for Christmas wants to land on the 23rd or 24th, and the Heathrow arrivals halls between 13:00 and 19:00 on Christmas Eve are the densest of the year. Trains run but finish early, and the taxi ranks and app pickups are at their worst because the demand is concentrated into six hours. If you are collecting relatives, book a car rather than driving in: the terminal forecourt drop-off charge is £7 at Heathrow and £10 at Gatwick and Stansted, the short-stay car parks fill, and the M4 spur backs up from mid-afternoon. A chauffeur waiting inside arrivals with a name board costs the same on the 24th as on any other day.

Boxing Day and the 28 December Bank Holiday

Boxing Day is the day people get caught out, because the airports are fully open and the transport is not. Last year there was no Heathrow Express and no Gatwick Express, the Stansted Express stopped short at Tottenham Hale, Thameslink did not serve Luton, and the Tube ran a reduced timetable. Airlines, on the other hand, run something close to a normal Boxing Day schedule, so tens of thousands of passengers land into a network on a Sunday footing. The inter-airport transfer page is worth a look if your itinerary involves changing airports on the 26th, when the rail connection between Heathrow and Gatwick simply does not exist.

Because Christmas Day is a Friday in 2026, Monday 28 December is a bank holiday. Expect Sunday-style timetables through the weekend and the Monday, engineering works on the main lines into Paddington and Victoria from 27 December into the New Year, and heavy road traffic around Westfield, Bicester Village and the Oxford Street sales on the 27th and 28th. A fixed price protects you from the traffic; leaving a little more time protects the flight.

Christmas Airport Transfer FAQs

How far in advance should I book an airport transfer for Christmas?

For 23 to 27 December, by the end of November. For other December dates, a week ahead is comfortable. The booking form accepts bookings up to eight hours before pickup, subject to a car being free, and Christmas Day is the one day of the year we would not rely on that.

Is there any public transport to Heathrow on Christmas Day?

No. There are no Tube, Elizabeth line, bus or Heathrow Express services on 25 December, and no National Rail. Only the free trains between Heathrow’s terminals run. The choice is a pre-booked car, a black cab from the rank, an app or a lift.

Do taxis charge more on Christmas Day?

Black cabs add TfL’s £4 extra to the metered fare from 20:00 on 24 December to 06:00 on 27 December, and again from 20:00 on New Year’s Eve to 06:00 on 2 January. Apps have no set surcharge but price on demand, which on Christmas Day and Boxing Day is high. MILE5’s fixed prices do not change over the holidays.

Will Uber be available at Heathrow on Christmas Day?

Some drivers work, so a car usually appears eventually, at a demand-driven price and with the usual walk to the short-stay car park. Whether one appears when you want it, at a price you expected, is the gamble a pre-booked car removes.

Does the Heathrow Express run on Boxing Day?

Not in recent years. In 2025 there was no Heathrow Express on either Christmas Day or Boxing Day, and the Piccadilly line was the only rail link to Heathrow on the 26th. The 2026 timetable is confirmed in November.

Where will my chauffeur meet me at Terminal 5?

Inside the arrivals hall, at the exit from customs, holding a board with your name. The same applies at Terminals 2, 3 and 4. The chauffeur’s name and number are sent before you land.

How much waiting time is included if my flight is late?

Sixty minutes from the actual landing time, at no charge, and because the flight is tracked the chauffeur is not sent until the aircraft is down. December fog delays are absorbed the same way.

Do you provide child seats?

Yes, free on request. Tell us the children’s ages when booking and the seats are fitted before the car leaves for the airport.

How much luggage can I bring?

An E-Class or S-Class carries three large cases plus hand luggage; a V-Class carries eight. Skis, golf bags, a pushchair or a wheelchair are fine; say so when booking so the right car is sent.

Do you charge extra for Christmas Day or Boxing Day transfers?

No. The price on the booking form is the price you pay, on any day of the year, and it includes the airport drop-off charge and any ULEZ or Congestion Charge that applies to the route.

Is there a coach from Heathrow on Boxing Day?

National Express has run a reduced Boxing Day service from Heathrow in recent years, but seats are limited and the coach ends at Victoria, so check the December timetable when it is published and book a seat early if you plan to use it.

What about New Year’s Eve?

Different night, different problems: the trains run but central London closes to traffic for the fireworks. Our New Year’s Eve airport transfer guide covers 31 December and New Year’s Day.
