Most Heathrow transfer problems aren’t caused by traffic or delays. They’re caused by decisions made before the journey starts. These are the ones we see most often.
Mistake 1: Booking a ride-hailing app without realising where the car actually is. App drivers cannot wait in the terminal drop-off areas. They queue in a dedicated car park that is a 10 to 15 minute walk from arrivals at Terminals 2, 3 and 4, and a shuttle bus ride from Terminal 5. A pre-booked chauffeur transfer means your driver is inside the terminal with your name on a board. You walk to him, not the other way around.
Mistake 2: Underestimating the M25 at peak hours. Off-peak it’s 45 minutes to Mayfair. Friday afternoon between 3pm and 7pm it can be 90 minutes. Always add 30 to 45 minutes of buffer for any transfer departing Heathrow between 7:30am and 9:30am, or 3:30pm and 7pm, on a weekday.
Mistake 3: Not accounting for immigration and baggage collection. Passport control queues for non-EEA nationals at Terminal 5 can run 45 to 60 minutes on a busy morning, and baggage reclaim after a long-haul flight adds 20 to 30 minutes. Mistake 4: Booking the wrong vehicle for your luggage. An E-Class holds two large suitcases and a carry-on comfortably. Friday 3pm to 7pm. The worst regular transfer window of the week. The M25 can be at a standstill between J15 and J12. Allow a 90-minute buffer for any onward plans.
Monday and Tuesday mornings, 7:30am to 9:30am. Heaviest commuter traffic meets the highest volume of business travellers. Allow 75 to 90 minutes Heathrow to Central London.
